I want to get a 800mhz antenna for my pro 106

with the stock antenna when listening to 800mhz, voice can come in garbled at times and sound like its underwater at times, for the most part its clear, but would like to do away with the underwater/garbling sound.

would an 800 mhz antenna fix that?

also would the current range I am getting with the stock antenna be less with one of those, and how much would signal strength/quality suffer on conv freqs?

I have heard many say the RS. 800mhz. antenna works pretty good I have one but, hardly have any 800mhz in this small town. but, I have found it to work pretty darn good on VHF High also on my pro-162.

It would depend on the reason for your bad audio. Too much signal, too little signal, or too many signals(multipath distortion)? What is your signal level when you hear the bad audio?

When you say you're listening to 800mhz, is it digital stuff? If so, you might be catching some digital distortion, that may not have anything to do with your antenna or radio.

The optional #20-283 800 MHz antenna will definitely give improved reception over the stock antenna on 800. But if you are having digital distortion the antenna won't make much difference unless the distortion was due to a weak signal.

yea.

The signal is usually strong

just sometimes during a conversation , it can be garbled or sound like underwater talking for a brief part of the talking

The problem could be the transmitting radio getting into the system, i.e. hitting the tower. If that is the case you aren't going to be able to correct this.

Are you listening to a simulcast system? There are plenty of reasons why it could sound like that if it's simulcast.

would an 800 mhz antenna fix that?

Maybe, particularly if you install a directional antenna. You can sometimes orient the antenna to minimize multipath phase distorted signals, or null out a poorly phased simulcast site.

also would the current range I am getting with the stock antenna be less with one of those, and how much would signal strength/quality suffer on conv freqs?

The antenna doesn't care if the signal is "conventional" or not. Do you mean 800 MHz vs VHF or UHF?

The antenna IS a vast improvement for rx on 800 meg. I can pick up control channels at 80-90% that don't break the squelch with the stock antenna. BUT, your VHF signals WILL be greatly attenuated when using the 800 antenna, compared to how you were recieving them on the stock antenna.
So it's a decision, as to which band do you want to recieve better, VHF or 800 meg?
