800Mhz handheld antenna rec

I'm considering the RS #20-283 800Mhz handheld BNC antenna for my BC 245xlt.

I'll be using it for a somewhat local urban TRS that sometimes fades in and out using the ducky. Anyone have experience with this item?

I have had one for a couple years. They work excellent on 800 MHz,
very good on UHF, poor on VHF high band, really poor on VHF low band.

I have one of those on my base and my 250D and seem to work quite well. I have a little trouble receiving when the wind is blowing hard, but have always had that problem with any antenna I have used on 800. I don't usually listen to UHF or VHF-lo, but there are a couple of VHF-hi band frequencies I listen to without any problems. Although, I am wondering if anyone has ever broken one of these antennas? I have pulled, bent, prodded that antenna on my handheld from taking it everywhere I go, and doesn't seem to be as good as it was when I first started using it. I have checked the solder joints and made sure there were no loose or broken connections in the scanner, but have found nothing. A friend of mine has a Pro-95 that has always seemed to receive better than mine using the same antenna.

I bought my Pro-95 scanner yesterday and today went to Radio Shack and got the 800 Mhz antenna and it made a world of difference. I listen to Police traffic mostly and the tuned 800 Mhz antenna gives less static and background noise and the clarity of the voice reception is much better.

If you're talking to me, Stateboy, I want to get better reception on the Chicago Police tactical system. I personally believe this must be some of the consistantly best scanning in the whole country. Some talkgroups are shown here.
