my factory Uniden adapter (140u) crapped out recently, and instead of going and ordering a new replacement,i found an adapter lying around that has an output of 9v,but the same amperage of 500mah.i went and tried it and it worked.so my question is,will the lower voltage output of the replacement do any damage,? I know too much amperage will cause trouble, but the lower voltage is what im wondering about.thanks in advance.

The most important specification is the voltage specification. To avoid either damage or operational issues, the voltage output of the adapter must be the same as the voltage required by the scanner.

A device only draws as much amperage as it needs. As long as the adapter can put out at least that needed amount, it is ok. If, for example, your device draws 350 mA and the adapter can supply 2000 mA, during operation the adapter will only put out 350 mA (the amount drawn by the device). If the adapter can only put out 100 mA, then the adapter will be overloaded and the likely result would be either the adapter delivering much lower voltage than rated or burning out.

thanks for the reply.i thought the mah output rating was a constant, not providing what the device demands as you say.as far as the voltage issue, ive let it run for awhile today and it works fine surprisingly.i guess i'll have to pick up another adapter with similar specs at my local electronics shop.thanks again for the info.
