Got chat about a surface ship and other aircraft in the area. All mission latitude and longitude info was given in some sort of alpha numeric code. They also gave the mission freqs in code. Freq-1 will be Lima-Kilo-Lima-dot-Kilo, freq-2 will be Lima-Foxtrot-Lima dot Alpha. The aircraft is in a search pattern. OMNI-01 was told its mission c/s would be "TOMB STONE".

Yea, I copied that as well. Not sure what status "cowboy" is, checked all my brevity - code data bases and couldn't find it. Also, interesting was the ground station request for "additional activity in area".

OMNI could be A-10's out of 172nd ANG in Michigan. They might be doing exercises somewhere. I've personally seen a lot of A-10 exericses around Nellis AFB in Nevada.

According to a previous discussion on here the A-10s would not normally be equiped with HF radios. Im thinking maybe the OMNI flights are Navy P-3C or AWACS type aircraft.

Heard twice about a half hour apart someone call "This is Headboard, standing by for traffic" with no reply. 550z the last call.

At 435z heard a non- English voice say just a very few words. I couldn't say for sure the language but sounded Russian/Slovakian or something along those lines.

710z "Sambra(SP) standing by for traffic" called 2 times no reply. Did "Headboard" go off duty and Sambra go on?

Headboard back 724z.

I also heard HeadBoard "stand by for traffic" on 8.992mhz upper side band... no reply.

thought it might be a TACAMO aircraft .checked some other USAF freqs for TACAMO traffic, nothing heard

Also copied "Headboard" ID and "standing by" 3 times, then signed off. Copied same message (2) other times in 30 minute intervals. This was on 11.175 USB.

Cool catch, and despite their using codes for the frequencies, it's probably poor COMSEC because it's safe to assume freq 1 & 2 would most likely be 225-400MHz, meaning Lima = 2 or 3.

Anyway, it's kind of a good example why freqs are usually pre-briefed.

This is what some of you guys were hearing last week:

Reporting for duty, Sir!

Though this blurb tends to paint the overall picture better:

Determined Spirits of Deterrence: B-2 bombers from the 509th Bomb Wing salvoed from Whiteman AFB, Mo., in a rapid-launch drill as part of US Strategic Command's Global Thunder exercise. Most importantly a command and control exercise, the full-scale strategic deterrence drill tested the strategic bomber force's ability to respond to an attack against the United States. Battle command staff, aircrew, maintainers, and support personnel put aircraft aloft, running response scenarios under simulated Presidential direction around the clock, during the Oct. 19-26 exercise. Global Thunder tested "all mission areas" within STRATCOM at the component, task-force, and unit level, to "deter and, if necessary, defeat, a military attack against the United States," stated wing officials. (Whiteman report by SrA Laura Goodgame)
