HELP !! I am pulling my hair out and getting majorly pissed !!
I am trying to update ALL the firmware to the latest. I have not done any upgrades yet since getting this thing when they first came out. I haven't really had any problems with the current 1.02.01 version it came with. But now I am wanting to upgrade my RR and do file downloads and such.....any way, back to my problem.
I have gone in to Uniden and did the register. Obviously it does not get an ESN checksum. So trying to do the firmware upgrade, I get links to "retrieve 996 V1 update", which I did. and "retrieve BC_v2.0.0.3" which I did. (it is the only one offered, but says I need a v1 version first. Is there somewhere else I need to go to get 1.04.12 VUP?) So, I tried it, and it will not open, saying I must not have the proper permission. I have read the instructions, which didn't tell me a dang thing. This really can't be that hard!! Any one want to throw out some suggestions. ( I mean I do firmware upgrades all day long on Mot 2way's, this is really wacked ). Thanks in advance!!

You already have the ESN/checksum in the scanner, it's there from the factory unlike the 396T

MENU > Settings > See Scanner Info > Firmware Version > and there you will see your (e)SN and SUM=

Also did you unzip the file that has the SCN file? And are you using the FRONT PORT?

I get the ESN but no SUM....
I downloaded and unzipped BC_VUP_v2.0.0.3 and BCD996T_V1_04_12, which were the only options it gave me.
Yes, using the front mini USB port.

That error message isn't one generated by the updater.

When does it appear (When you try to unzip the files? When you try to run the BC_VUP installer? When you try to run the installed BC_VUP program?)

When I try to run BC_VUP_v2.0.0.3 I get the message that it can not open and that I must not have the proper permission to use this program.

If I try to just open the file: BCD996T_V1_04_12, it looks for a program to run it with and can't find one. Even if I ask it to search the web for the appropriate program, it come back with a windows page that says it can not find one.

I am kind of thinking I do not have a proper VUP loaded. Thinking I need an earlier v1.x.x.x version to get caught up with the rest of the world who are now using the v2.x's.

Just a quick question...Are you an administrator on the computer you are using?

BC_VUP is backward compatible to all previous loads.

So, you were able to unzip BC_VUP, then when you ran that file, it failed to install the application? BC_VUP_2.0.0.3.zip is not an executable file. You have to unzip the file first to a directory, then run that executable to install the application. Don't try to run it from "inside" the zip viewer.

Otherwise, if it unzipped OK then failed on the install it sounds like an administration rights issue with your PC (as DarickT references).

That could be the issue. I will have to wait now until monday to work on this here at work, or try it again on my home laptop where I do have Admin rights. We'll see what happens and I'll be back in touch here when I cover this avenue. Thanks for you help.

if your on a work computer and it's on a network then you don't have admin access, do it on your home computer where you have admin rights.

Dumb Question..

Just a quick question...Are you an administrator on the computer you are using?

How do you set yourself up as administrator in XP CORRECTLY..

I have my Profile in XP set to be Admin, but too often I get the "You need to be Administrator to do this or that" and sometimes requests a Admin Password (which I don't even see a place TO set one..) - Big Dummy Guide for Seniors requested.. :)))

From the menu select "control panel", in control panel find "User Accounts", select your account, select "Change My Account type", and Select "Computer Administrator" (you probably already have it set up this way) but this will confirm it. If your user account isn't setup as an administrator you will have to use an account with administrator permissions to change your settings. If you have another user account that is setup to be an administrator, try using that account when you log on next.

Is this correct? When did the "factory" begin shipping the 996 with the ESN/checksum in the scanner (ESN installed)?

It was not correct. The BCD996T does not display the checksum until you apply the last V1 update.
