Well, I've run out of potty words. I have made several attempts to update the firmware in my 996.

I figured I might be in for trouble when I could not download the BC_VUP_v2.0.0.7.zip file. First I got a message that said the page didn't exist. Then I got some kind of firewall message saying something about adware.

Nonetheless, I tried using the older BC VUP program. After entering the registration key, and it going through the update process, at the end I got a message saying the checksum failed and I should try using a lower baud rate. So I set the baud rate as low as it will go, and I still got the "sorry about your luck" message.

Any thoughts??

Just checking, are you using the front or rear port on the scanner?

I was going to update the firmware in my 996, however the manual stated Firmware upgrades can only be done via the Front PC port. Right now I'm using the rear port with a USB-serial adapter & gender changer.

I suggest - use the front port - ensure your com port is com port is correct 1 or 2 etc - double check the checksum values - use the 57600 bps -

I've used the front port - the instructions were pretty clear on using that one.

I don't know what you mean by double checking the checksum values. The only input that I had was for the registration key - which I simply copied and pasted from the "My Uniden" site.

Did you turn on the scanner while holding the correct keys?

Well . . . I tried going through all the steps you mentioned. You guys is kinda sneaky you know. The instructions say to "Update the information", but it isn't too clear on how to go about that. I clicked on the scanner I had, and that opened up the update window. From there I could get the V3 registration key, which I did.

However, the instructions then go on to say "On your "All My Scanners" page, click "Get v3.xx.xx Firmware." (This will not appear until you get a key.) " I got the key, but there wasn't anything visible to so I could do that.

I did the alternative - finally getting the 2.0.0.7 updater and the .scn file. Tried that with no luck. The message I get says "Checksum failed, try lower baudrate". I went as low as it would go and still got failures.

I've tried this on two separate computers, thinking perhaps one had some kind of issue with that. However, the same error message keeps cropping up.

On the scanner the display says "Registration Key required, re-send update with key" and the shows the ESN as well as the checksum (I guess) of 10F,M-Ver=1.

Also, I could re-load the 1.04.12 firmware with no problem, as long as I did not do the major update, thus requiring the key.

Any keys I got came right of the MyUniden page by copying and pasting.

I've done several other firmware updates for a couple of my scanners and for other folks too. I never had a time like this.

When I went through the process of getting the key and doing the major update, things did not show up on the web-page as described in the instructions until I closed my browser, re-opened it and logged in again. That is pretty common what with cookies, browser cache and the like. If I don't see something on a web-page the way I expect it to, that is the first thing I do. At least refresh the page, or even close the browser and re-navigate to the page.

Your checksum is "10F".
Your scanners Major Version number is 1. If you are going to V3.xxx that is a major firmware change, requiring the ESN.
Register your scanner, including both its ESN and ESN Checksum.
Go to your All My Scanner's page and click "Get v3 Checksum" for that scanner.
If you've already done that, then the key will already be listed on your All My Scanners page.
That is the key you need to enter in BC_VUP to do the update.

I DID IT!!!. Musta been because I went to church this morning and did not fall asleep during the sermon.

What I ended up doing was deleting the two scanners I had listed and then re-registered them. I'm 99% sure that I mis-entered something the first time. In turn, that error may have carried itself all the way through the update process. I'm guessing but the downloaded key must associate with the ESN and checksum information.

So anyone having a similar challenge may try that. Also, to update your registered scanners, on the My Uniden page, click on the "nick-name" and that will open up another window allowing you to update that.

Thanks for all the input!
