as soon as I turn the radio on, it says it goes to close call DND mode, then goes straight to close call only mode.

The only thing I did before I noticed this change was remove the speaker from inside (took both cases off in order to dash mount it, too tight of fit otherwise)

The squelch doesn't work either, since this change. No static when I open squelch all the way.

Anyone else had a problem like this? I have ver3 firmware.

Sounds like you damaged the internals when it was pulled apart.

Since the 996 has the Close Call function is available as a push button on the Squelch control, I would say the two are related. You must have messed up the wiring to the Squelch control somehow.

Well if I am looking at this picture right - http://wiki.radioreference.com/images/3/30/Bc996discriminatortap.jpg the squelch is on the little board at the bottom left in this picture. Since its now exposed, it could either be shorted against something or you cracked or did something to a trace on the board.

I would pull it back out and see if it works again, if so, try and mount it with the cover back on it!!!

well. I was pretty careful taking the casing off so I don't think I damaged anything. Didn't think about a short possibility. I'llput the case back and post the results.

Thanks everyone.

Well like I said before, I couldn't get it to fit into the double din unless both cases were off. I've previously mounted it this way before and didn't notice any difference with overloading.

Point taken however.

I figured it out. It was a short. When I pulled the scanner out (so it was not touching the FM stereo) it worked fine.

slid a piece of thick paper between the two and working good now.

thanks for suggestions.
