I tried searching for an answer but couldn't find a good one. I'm looking for other free programming software titles that will program my 996. I'm currently using the UASD software, and I don't want to purchase anything because I listen to my scanner more than I program it.

Feel free to use the USAD software. Thats all I used for the first 6 months after I bought my 996, works great and it did everything I wanted it to do.

I bought both ScanCat-Lite and Butel ARC996 for my 996... I'm still using UASD. I find the UASD to be simpler and quicker than the others. I'm guessing that will ruffle a lot of feathers with some of the die-hard Butel followers, but since I have everything around me programmed, I don't need to spend a lot of time tinkering with settings. I made my master configuration and rarely do I make changes.

The UASD Software is fine and really only lacks one major thing - no direct import from RR.com. If you either don't have a lot to program or don't mind typing and tweaking, then you won't miss that feature.

What about the UASD software do you find lacking?

The Uniden software does not do a good job in explaining things in the Help file. I found some explanations to be weak or useless, and it didn't really tell me how to operate the software as much as it told me the different features or how to input things. it could just be that I prefer step-by-step instructions over pictures.

Other things I find dissapointing is that when you save a frequency log after using the Online Control, it does the absolute worst job. Instead of saving fields such as Frequency, Mode, Attenuator, Tone, and so on into their own cell on a .cvs file, it's mashed together in one line. This is a pain because it takes forever to unscramble.

I can say this about the software. Once you get the hang of it, it is easy to use. Everything is separated into it's own category, and sending information from the computer to the scanner is a breeze.

It's not that I don't like the software, I want to try something other than the UASD because I need something to compare it to.

Well then give the butel demo a try. I think you will find that you will be wanting to buy it.
