Hello all,

I have been searching to find the reason that my 996T with the 3.02 firmware insists upon hanging up when uploading to it sometimes. I primarily use Proscan or FreeScan with ARC996PRO as another program. It has happened with all of these programs and I also have THREE different cables from Uniden to use. 1 is the RS232 plug while the other 2 have USB. I bought the cables because I was trying to see if it was the cables causing the problem. It appears they are not unless all 3 are bad and it does not appear to be the programs either. Oh, I normally use a laptop running XP Pro with Service pack 3. But have also tried using a new Vista machine and another pc with XP. All have at least 1gb of RAM. I have talked to Uniden and even sent the scanner to them, which was returned with no problem found, about a year ago. The setup I normally had in the scanner had somehow gotten reinstalled though while it was gone! Is there another reset known only to UPMan? LOL

The current hangup occurred when I was updating VA STARS using Proscan 4.7. The program got to around 80% and hung aka stopped uploading. I let it sit for hours without any change. So I did what I hate to do and that is do the old reset the holding down 2, 9 and hold, while powering on which sometimes means I have to reinstall the firmware updates. This time the screen only has the welcome msg and goes no further. I have seen it allow me to update the firmware the next day several times after leaving it powered off for 24hrs. The firmware upgrade program from Uniden keeps giving me the same msg of "not locating any scanner" and the programs give the same msg more or less. I have checked and rechecked many times this past week and nothing appears to be amiss on my side of the program. I have browsed and searched for a different approach with no results that I didn't already know. I cannot for the life of me find the instructions given by UPMan long ago on the subject, which I had printed out. So I guess there could be something I didn't remember to do.

I guess it could be a scanner problem such as the front data plug? (yes, I have verified the port setup 20 times). LOL... Since I was always able to do the job before with the instructions beside me using the instructions verbatim, I have felt I would eventually get there. But as of today and after another fruitless search, I am asking the question no one likes which is "what do you do and how do you do it if you have a situation like mine and need to reinstall the firmware from 1.# to 3.02", when you have only the normal power on screen? Should I send it to Uniden again? Advice, some nice good advice is needed?! LOL

Thanks much!

Ben

I wouldn’t send it out for repair as it sounds like it could be cockpit error.

When you do a memory clear, the firmware does not need to be reloaded. With that being said, something is hosed and the firmware may need to be reloaded in this case.

Because you did a memory clear, the front port defaulted to 115.2 kbaud and the rear port 4.8 kbaud. If your program of choice isn't communication (mine or others) check the comm. port baud rate setting that it matches the scanner.

On ProScan, if the upload gets to 80% and stops, there is an Upload Errors.txt file that may indicate the problem. "Out Of Resources" indicates the scanner memory is full. Before uploading, click the ProScan "Statistics" button to show warnings if the scanner memory will be exceeded.

Identifying firmware version on 996XT

Read your post and comments on firmware. I am brand new to the 996XT and wondering what the procedure is to identify the software version loaded in my new 996XT scanner. Any help to the newbie will be appreciated.

Thanks trunker. That is what I needed and have printed it off again. I don't understand why when I did a search for it that it did not come up though.
Now i am back up to 3.0.2 but it will not allow me to upload any freqs, etc. I have tried all 3 programs plus reloaded firmware twice. I either get 1 of 2 error msgs. Either it can't find the scanner or all resources are full. I have verified the port setups and it is right. However, the scanner display is still holding on the 2 screens, flipping back and forth between the 2. Weird stuff going on!!!

Hi Bob
Thanks for the reply. It defaulted to 57.#kb on the front and I have never used the rear jack. Looking at my reply to "trunker" you can see that even though the Uniden Updater is saying it did it's thing, the scanner is still in limbo land or so it appears. I normally use your program 4.4.7 to feed RR so I can have a log of what is being sent. But I cannot get anything to upload....even though I see "erasing data" msgs sometimes at the beginning.. SO it has gotten rather weird and makes my head ache!! LOL

Thanks
Ben

Try sending a system or two at a time.. You don't have to load everythingl at once.

Thanks Dan, but the problem now is that I can't even get it to recognize it has a program. IF a scanner program does recognize it is a scanner, it does not get what model it is...even when I have already told the software it is a 996T. If it tries to upload freqs, it stops within a minute to say the scanner is not recognized.

If I am remembering right as the scanner is upstairs now....you press the menu key, then (i think) look for scanner info or scanner settings.. of course there might be another key to press before you actually get to that. LOL I know it is "scanner info".
