This may be a silly question, but what cable are you using to connect your scanner to the PC?

There's a whole bunch of things that could be wrong here. But first let's start with some simple questions - which USB did you get? Did you get the USB-1 from Uniden, or something else? Did you download the latest XP drivers from the manufacturer's or distributor's website? Did you check Device Manager to see whether the COM port that got assigned was actually available? Did you assign the right COM port in the software you are using (and which software are you using)?

In general, the steps for attaching a USB device to a scanner are, from what I've read and been told...

a. Load drivers. Make sure you have the latest ones from the manufacturer or distributor
b. Check COM port in Device Manager to insure COM port is really available. Some devices, like Bluetooths, have a habit of grabbing a port and not letting it go even when it's not physically connected
c. Connect USB device to port
d. Start software
e. Ensure software can actually address the port you've allocated. Make the software look at the port.
f. Connect scanner

More details, please. 73 Mike

I just bought this unit used. No markings on the USB cord and no documentation in the box. I have it working with the 9pin now. When I attached the cord with scanner on it recognized new hardware but wanted the software to make it work. I'm guessing a USB driver. At this point I am able to program and use ARC996 by 9 pin but it would be great to have the driver so I can also use my laptop.

Since the 996 is not a USB device (the cable is the USB device) you'll need to find the appropriate driver for the cable. Describe the cable. Is it a "generic" db9 to USB adapter or is it a cable that has USB on one end, the scanner connector on the other and a lump in the middle?

I found what I needed, sorry everybody, I'm brand new to digital "High Tech" scanning. I finally found that my cable looked like the uniden USB-1. Downloaded that driver and set the comm port, works like a charm. I appreciate the help with my limited amount of information. I'm sure you will see me asking other questions and hopefully I have enough info next time. Again, thanks everybody.
