It has been years since I've been "into" scanners and a LOT has changed, to say the least. I have a simple question regarding the use of a GPS receiver in conjunction with the scanner:

If I am not going to use it mobile, what is the GPS purpose? (I know where I am!) I haven't read anything yet that explains the GPS receiver usage.

I just happen to have one from previous seismology hobby, but it is not in use now.

Thanks,

you wont need it if your not going mobile.

Basically if you input coordinates for systems you can have them turn on and off based on your location again if your staying still there is no need.

And just as a point of information, we have an excellent article on the subject of Location Based Scanning linked in the DMA FAQ

It turns on and off systems based on your location so if you left your city it won't scan there any more until you return..
