Ok, I've programmed my 996xt off of the computer, but this weeks project is doing it from the keypad.

IIRC, I have many systems, law enforcement, fire, etc. Labeled S0: 1 on the scanner for police, S0: 2 for fire.

This scanner is a home unit. Scanner feed is online here, San Juan County, NM, Radio Shack antenna on a 30 foot tower. I don't use GPS, or use the unit from a vehicle.

And I have groups for the systems.

I've obviously turned off the groups. Function 1 does nothing. BUT S0: 1 Group 1 and 2 aren't activated.

They are most definitely not locked, I've checked a hundred times.

How do I turn on the groups?

And the manual requires a PHD to read. I have technical manuals at work that my co-workers would never understand. This scanner manual is over the top. I do now understand about the three levels of functionality, tap, function tap, and function tap and hold.

I need to get my feed back online, tonight if possible.

Can any of you help?

And yes, I CAN go re-program it from the computer, but that isn't the point. I need to defeat this functionality.

Boy, that's some fine tuning there captain

I did it, but you have to be quick about it. And I NEVER thought a FAQ on the 396T would apply to the 996XT.

And it deserves repeating, that's some fine tuning there.

Please bump this up to admin to update the wiki to include the 996XT, because I did do a search before posting. This is the major complaint of newbies, they don't search. I did but could not find it.

Stubbs try it this way this is the way i did all of mine, and it will be a manual way, hit menu then program system, find the system youre trying to quick key, look for edit site and click on that site, then where it says the site click on it and youll see set quick key, then you have to turn the knob until whatever number you want the system to be on, and make note there may be more than one site in a system so if you want them all on the same quick key you will have to do the same for each site, and then after you do all that you can mess with the groups, hit program again, then find youre system you wanna program the groups in and push the knob down again to select that system, then scroll down to where it says edit groups and see how many if any you have ? and if you dont have any you can make a new group by clicking on new group, and after you go into one of youre groups or make a new group you will see the options of setting it to a quick key, if you leave it on the . then you wont be able to assign it to a quick key, but if you turn the knob and set it too a 1 or a 2 then you can assign it too a quick key, and after youre done all that you have to make sure after you set all these quick keys that you have them turned on whille trying to scan stuff, meaning if youre radio says nothing to scan then you have to push whatever number you assigned those quick keys too, meaning push 1 to listen to system on and so on, if not you will see nothing to scan, hope this helps you Danny...

I have....

I have highly technicial and precise equipment at work that is easier to program. Manuals in 5 books, each covering one aspect.

Jeez, use a Pro-94 for 20 years, and the upgrade path is hard.

No update needed; if you read the article it says quite clearly ...

and other Uniden Dynamic Memory Architecture scanners

By the way the wiki is an area you can edit yourself. No admins needed, except on certain pages that anchor whole sections.

I still can't get over how horrendous the interface is with Uniden now. I miss hitting something like 501 Manual and jumping to that channel. With this radio its not so easy. Very disappointing...

How about 5.1 instead? If that works, then read about number tags and how to use them in the manual. Might be just what you're looking for.

With DMA there really isn't a channel 501 in the scanner. This is a good thing. You can have a whole bunch of channels in one system, and very few in another, and only use (or use as many) slots required to have it together. With the systems number tagged, and the channels number tagged (both with whatever number you want) you can easily jump to a certain channel. For example, the public safety I listen to (Louisville Metro, Ky) just switched to a Motorola P-25 800 mhz system. During the transition I scanned the old and new systems. For the conventional channel for the 6th and 7th divisions of the police department, I would type in 1.21 + menu and jump straight to that channel. Now I type in 3.21 + menu and jump straight to the P-25 talkgroup for the same units.

System HOLD

I still like the 996XT's System HOLD function which I found quite by accident.:) And once you get over the BANK / CHANNEL way of doing it from years gone by and use DMA scanners for a while it gets easier. True the learning curve is rough but well worth it, I recall the easy way when all you did was buy a crystal for what you wanted to hear. Those days are long gone, and crystals were not cheap.

Long press HOLD to hold on the current system. Long press HOLD again to release system hold.
