You program each channel for the ALERT Color. Trouble is it doesn't usually last for the whole transmission. After the ALERT it reverts to whatever color is your normal SCREEN COLOR

Are the 396XT's the same?

I thought I saw one in a picture with a green backlight, but all the pictures on the uniden site show it as orange/red.

The 396XT is basically the same..BOTH the 996XT and the 396XT have several colors for the screen

Blue
Red
Magenta
Green
CYAN
Yellow
White

You can select any COLOR for Normal screen color and any COLOR for ALERT Color even different colors for different agency type (Police/Fire/Med)
