Well, I'm getting into my new 996xt and I have a slight problem and a question with it.

First, the slight problem. After I input some conventional frequencies for my area, I somehow managed to set it in a search mode that I can't turn off. I can get it to also scan the frequencies I put in - that's a step in the right direction ;) - but I can't get the "public safety" and "special" band search to stop scanning with it.

I'm assuming I somehow grouped them together or is it in some kind of priority mode...?

Which leads me to the next, more "simple" question... as for programming trunked systems I will assume also that software of some type is required.

I'm foraging through the myriad articles/links etc but I haven't come across this particular issue yet.

Any and all replies are appreciated in advance. Thank you

While it is in that search, press F+L/O, L/O to lock out the search.

Thank you Paul

That did the trick! :)

I'm left to wonder how it got there though. Any thoughts so I can hopefully steer clear of it again?

Thanks again

"Search With Scan" allows you to include the canned Service Searches and Custom Searches in series with your regular systems that you've programmed.

Public Safety and Special are service searches that are built into the scanner.

Each individual Service Search or Custom Search is either included or excluded from the main scanning lineup with their individual Lockout settings. UPman was having you set the lockout for the ones that got un-locked out somehow.

If you program your scanner with software, perhaps you've loaded a configuration that has some of these service or custom searches unlocked.

If you want to get to this stuff using the keypad, go to
Menu, Search For..., Edit Service, {here you'll see a list of service searches, select one, say, Public Safety}
Inside Public Safety, you'll see a list of settings for that service search. If you go down to Search With Scan, you'll find an option for Set Lockout. Here is where you would unlock it, or lock it out temporarily (until power cycle) or lock it out permanently.

Each of the Service Searches, and each of the Custom Searches has this setup option to lockout or lock-in the search as a Search with Scan.

Bigger Picture, we've been talking about Search With Scan so far, where the individual canned searches can be included in your scanning system lineup. There is also a way to just execute a service search or custom search and stay on that without scanning your regular lineup. That would be done by selecting "Service Search" or "Custom Search" instead of "Edit Search" or "Edit Custom" in the menu sequence above.

I appreciate your reply kbehning

I was aware of the search options but the problem was that I couldn't figure out how to lockout/remove the "canned" items while only scanning my inputted frequencies.

I also have not purchased any software for it yet, which was one of my other queries in the post.

I'll be getting the ARC program soon as I see it offers a quicker/easier way to get things done. Hopefully it will be akin to the sentinel for HP1, which seems to be a decent yet simple program to use.

Thanks again, I appreciate your time.

Thanks Doc

I was looking at trying that first actually.

And the more I think of it, I probably should. That way if I get too frustrated I won't have spent another 40 bucks on something I can't use! ;)

Once you get the software, you should be able to assign both Service Searches and Custom Searches with System Quick Keys. This allows fast access to them if you need to check for freqs (or if you are bored), but also allows them to be shut off just as fast.

Thanks cg

I'm very slowly getting used to this thing.

My area isn't trunked/digital yet, so I can't really use any of that portion of the unit. I've been reading and going over the maunuals, checking the wiki's etc and trying to get a grasp of it before our system switches over. Now it's time to try the software and see how that goes.

I've already gotten used to the HP1 and the 800, for the most part, but the 996xt is a whole 'nuther ball o wax! Or so it would seem... ;)

Thanks for the help.

Speaking of software

So am I to assume, again, that the freescan is not actually "free" because you need to buy a subscription to RR in order to use it?

Similarly, does the ARC software come "loaded" with any RR data? By the looks of it, I'm guessing no...

You do not need subscription. "Look Aunty - No Subscription!"

Using EZGrab, you can COPY the data from the database and PASTE into Freescan.

It takes a little practice to see exactly how it works, but it's how I entered pretty much my entire contents.

Highlight-Copy to Clipboard->Freescan->EZGRAB and observe.

Wiki: http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Freescan_EZGrab

Hope that helps.

That surely helps. I had forgotten that EZgrab feature. I kinda thought something didn't make sense. ;)

Well. I'm going to try that as long as I'm "practicing" the rest of this unit.

Hey Doc, so now the Freescan "issue" ;)

While EZgrabbin my conventional frequency choices, it's "importing" or copying a bunch of so called channels that are automatically loading with only the 1 or 2 frequencies I select. Thus having to go back and delete hundreds of "channels" from the list.

Is this where the Firefox recommendation comes into play or am I missing something else/doing something wrong?

Thanks

Perhaps your grab extends beyond your reach? LOL

Are you certain that you are only highlighting the frequencies you want when you COPY?

If so, then only those frequencies should paste into Freescan.

It would appear I'm doing it the same way you showed. I think I didn't explain it correctly.

When I copy from clipboard, for example, it says 34 channels selected when I've only copied 2. Then after import, the list shows a long column with a bunch of zeros as frequencies, interspaced with the actual frequency and pl tone. These are all listed under the same column- the first one labeled frequency/name- with all the other columns empty.

Maybe it's supposed to do this but it doesn't seem right. It's not represented properly by a cut n paste of but this is what happens:

After you highlight you're doing a right-click and then selecting "copy" from the menu that pops up and...this is what you're getting?

That would be correct

Thanks for your reply 03

That's why I'm wondering if the recommendation for using the firefox browser is appropriate.

What you posted above is exactly what Internet Explorer does. Not sure why but IE doesn't work at all for this, and I've always used Firefox for reliable results. Firefox does it correctly, IE does NOT.

I had to assume this would be the reason.

I was just about ready to try firefox and see what the results would be. I will report back as soon as I do.

Thanks for the info joe :)

You are correct JoeyC. That's exactly what the problem is/was.

They recommend firefox and this is most likely the reason. I would suggest/urge anyone else to do the same. ;)

Thanks again!
