Hello All,

On the 9th of July, 2004, my brother, a Kansas Turnpike Authority Trooper, rolled his car at over 100 miles an hour chasing a bad guy. He ran over a bolt on the road and it quickly deflated the rear tire causing him to roll at least 4 times according to his dash-cam.

I'm curious if anyone was recording the traffic on the turnpike that day. According to the local newspaper it occured around 2pm. He was on I-35 between El Dorado and Kellog. I've gotten a cassette recording of the 911 tapes, but I'm hoping that someone happened to be recording that day, without all of the civilian calls that were also coming in to report his rollover. He was airlifted out that day. I'm interested in the KHP traffic, unless you happen to have the El Dorado and/or Kellog area PD, FD, or EMS traffic too.

He's still recovering and hopes to return to work for KHP.

Thanks for any help,
John

Usually the radio transmissions are recorded by the agencies themselves. If the State has a FOIA type law usually you can obtain the tapes through that method.

Thanks for responding. I have the recordings from the dispatchers, but the recording is mixed with 911 calls, calls from other departments, and the radio dispatches. I was hoping that someone might have recorded just the radio traffic heard from the scanner. It's really confusing, and impressive at the same time. Makes you wonder how the dispatchers successfully do their job :)

Thanks again,
John

Godspeed to your brother, John. I'm from Oklahoma, but travel via the turnpike every other weekend to pick up my kids for "daddy weekend". Of course, I listen to KTA while on the turnpike. These guys can't be appreciated enough!

Most agencies that I know about have recorders that record each item seperate, 10 phone lines, 10 recorded phone lines, 5 radio channels, 5 recorded radio channels. I suspect when the request was made for a recording they just gave you every thing. Make a request for the radio traffic between your brother and dispatch only.

Hope your brother makes it back.

Thanks Rick,

I'll go back and see what I can do. My brother loves his job and I'd love for him to get back in there. He wasn't in contact with KTA dispatch at the time. He had just crossed the median to head southbound after the guy that flew past him. It is kind of eeiry because at first they didn't know it was a State Trooper and they were calling for him to respond to the accident scene. It was only when a civilian started screaming "officer down" on his radio and an off duty deputy from OK got on the radio to advise they needed a helicopter, and of course, the deputy saying my brothers name over the radio, did they realize for sure it was one of their own. He's a tough one and hopefully you'll hear his call on the radio once again.

Thanks again to all,

John
