Airbus A380 superjumbo to make first flight to U-S

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - A ground-breaking flight is expected at New York's Kennedy airport tomorrow.

The Airbus A380 superjumbo jet is scheduled to make its first flight to the United States.

More than 500 passengers are expected to be on the eight-hour Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt, Germany. Most will be Airbus and Lufthansa employees, along with some reporters.

The flight will operate just as if it were a commercial one, with full dining and entertainment services -- and a cabin crew of nearly two dozen.

After the inaugural run, Lufthansa and Airbus will operate a demonstration flight to Chicago's O'Hare airport on Tuesday before returning to New York and then to Frankfurt.

It heads next to Hong Kong and back, then to Washington's Dulles airport on March 25th.

JFK arrival time

FRANKFURT, Germany Mar 18, 2007 (AP)— For plane builder Airbus and German airline Lufthansa AG, the A380's first flight to North America on Monday is a chance to show off the superjumbo to potential U.S. buyers and to the airports they hope will be flight bases for the double-decker jet. "We're talking about an airplane that is representing aviation in the 21st century in terms of efficiency," said Jens Bischoff, Lufthansa's vice president for the Americas. "Of course it is not just a test flight. We're going with a fully loaded plane into Washington and New York and hope to optimize all the opportunities." For Airbus, which has been beset by management and financial crises including a two-year delay to the A380 that wiped more than euro5 billion (US$6.61 billion) off profit forecasts the flight is a chance to prove that the plane will be ready when the first deliveries are made in October to Singapore airlines. The air show Monday begins at Frankfurt International Airport when the 73-meter-long (more than 239 foot-long) plane takes off as Lufthansa Flight 8940 at 9 a.m. (0800GMT) for the eight-hour flight to New York's JFK Airport, scheduled to land at 12:30 p.m. (1630GMT). Onboard will be 550 people, mostly Airbus and Lufthansa employees along with some reporters

For those out of the area you can always hear live feeds from JFK and others at
http://www.liveatc.net/feedindex.php?type=all

JFK Tower is usually most popular anyhow.Always something interesting there and Tower ops are
regular comedians at times.
When it gets busy it gets crazy.
You get Lufthansa,Kuwaiti,Aeroflot etc and all the rare International flights and of course Jet Blue.

I wish it wasn't arriving and departing Dulles after dark. I would be able to see without leaving home, and really well if it was arriving from/departing to the north or west.

I'm sure FOX or CNN will hopefully have live arrivals as well.
Saw article the other day that California LAX was ticked off that New York was getting
first A-380 so Airbus set up bi-coastal arrivals.

Hello I seen the A-380 when it came to Melbourne Australia last year and it was a buzz that day and there was about 10 thousand people watching the Plane coming in near the runway and it is a very quiet Plane and to be honest if you didnt see it you wouldnt know it landedand the Plane is not a big Plane but its height is massive and I went with a big group of People and we had about 30 Radios to monitor the Airbands.

Regards Lino.

Hello Friends:

I heard that that sucker can carry over 800 people, wow
From what I've read (Airliners magazine) the 500 + capacity is based on having lounges, business class sleeper seats and such. In all economy seating, it can hold 800. It's not really the breakthrough the 747 or concorde were, but still impressive, (and ugly)!!

Hello the Airbus-A380 can take a lot of People on board but the Problem will be how quick can they turn around the Aircraft and the logistics side and they would have to be organized because I have noticed with theAirbus-340/Boeing-777 it takes them about 30 to 1hour buy the time they push back from the Gate and take off.

Regards Lino (Melbourne Australia)

The hour between pushback and wheels up has little to do with the fact that it's an A340 or B777. The largest airliners fly from the busiest airports into the busiest airspace. The "delays" are largely due to the needs of ATC, not the number of passengers the airliner might have aboard.

I think you'll find that, when ground time is an hour for jumbo jets, it's about the same for almost everybody.

That is a LARGE airplane. Coming up 294 Northbound I thought I was about 45 minutes early for the landing(East vs Central time?) but it was on the ground. Have you ever seen a plane dwarf the terminal?

Must be something about German pilots and the phraselogy of being" ready for take off on the roll". The controller told him again to hold short and asked if he was ready and he said yes. Sweeper trucks swept the runway before and after and another pilot asked if it was falling apart.

Being almost under 12 MILE and Hilltop on the way up was a treat. I guess I will need a beam to get 350.350 from Indy.

It was looking like it would be landing on 1L at Dulles tonight. But they just changed the pattern so arrivals are coming in on 19L.

126.1 > 125.8 >128.425 are pretty much definates to listen to. Before Potomac Approach I'm not sure where it will be. Also they may call the Dulles Jet Center on 130.65.

It's flight DLH 8948 and it's not on flightaware.com

ZNY-Big Flat 132.2 is a possibility before Potomac App.
