Twice in the the two months I've owned my 436, the speaker has blown. After a three week wait for a 10 minute fix, I'll have had my radio in the shop for 6 weeks out of the 10 or so I've owned it. It's really frustrating since it has never been above 11, maybe 12 on the volume. I think the issue lies in the <lack of> AGC that doesn't seem to do anything on the P25 systems in the area. I'd like to try finding a more robust speaker that I could install myself. Anyone tried or have any ideas about this?

I had similar problems with my my 346XT and my 396XT. So far my 436 is ok. I believe its a common problem with Uniden Handheld Scanners.

If you need "loud audio" on a handheld...look at getting an amplified external speaker. Or headphones.

I run my 436 at 15 volume in the truck for a minimum of 2 hours a day 5 days a week without problems. Not sure if I'm just lucky or what.

I think you're lucky. I've never had mine above 10 but it's rattling and driving me nuts because of the above issue.

I've looked at the speaker and it's not blown in the traditional sense of ripped material, rather it's deformed with one side being flatter than the other. Analog transmissions generally sound okay, but P25 transmissions are muddy and garbled.

idea

Get a junk Garmin c580 or 530 and take the speaker out of that or a
Escort radar detector. I blast the crap out of my c580 and it never blows.
The Speaker should fit fine but there could be epoxy around it be careful!
by the way also works in the r20 icom....I did that already....

I had my BCD 436 for a while and the speaker has blown a few times. I just ordered a few spares and it's a snap to replace. Just 6 screws opens the unit and there is a metal clip holding the speaker in. Pull the clip off, pull out the old speaker, drop in the new on and you are good to go. There is no glue or anything (but opening the unit may void the warranty)

Here's where you get a replacement speaker:
