I'm on the Internet today and my screen starts shifting up and down. It doesn't matter what Web site I'm on, Yahoo, Hulu or even RR for that matter. It's kind of difficult to write a post when the message field is moving up and down.

So my question is, what is the cause of all this jumping? Is my computer having a nervous breakdown? This happens enough to now be a pain you know where, although it's not happening as I type this. I'm working the Vista operating system and am on a high speed cable modem through Time Warner. Any ideas are appreciated.

Always start troubleshooting with restarting the computer.

Then unplug and replug both ends of the monitor cable.

If that doesn't work, try another cable.

If that doesn't work, try another monitor.

And if that still doesn't solve your problem then you need a new video card.

EDIT: I forgot to add, does your taskbar and everything jump? Or just what is displayed in the web browser? If it's everything then follow the above, if it's just the web browser then you have a stuck key on your keyboard most likely.

Bad monitor. Video cards don't generally do that when they go bad.

Just the stuff on my web browser. I don't experience this problem all the time, just every now and then, and only when I surf the Web. If I'm using a program like Word, I don't experience this jumpy screen at all. So your diagnosis seems the most logical, especially given the way I pound on my keyboard.

Thanks for your help.

What you describe doesn't sound like a monitor issue, and these symptoms are pretty much limited to CRTs.

If a text box has focus, the page shouldn't be able to move aside from using the mouse wheel or a piece of malware manipulating the page content. If this first started recently, do a system restore to a point where you know these symptoms were not present. That should take care of any malware. If that doesn't work, try a different mouse. If you are on a laptop, make sure your forearm or the side of your palm is not brushing the scroll zone of the touchpad.

Try using the manual degaussing feature on your monitor? I have a 19" kds monitor and sometimes I do this after it jumps a bit. This usually helps.
