A pair of articles gives an interesting look back to the 1955-56 as LA County Fire has just started to shifts from using dedicated phone lines when dispatching units to the "Selective Call Units", made famous by Emergency!, why there were implemented and their results early on.

The articles also discuss the radio systems the dispatch centers located throughout the county were using and expanding.

Unfortunately, I don't see a way to read the entire article(s) without purchasing a subscription to FIRE ENGINEERING.

I had no problem. Failing that you can also google the article, then read it from the archive.
