Hello!

I hope you will forgive me for interrupting your local radio / TV discussions in an effort to rack your brains about my intention to pursue radio work in Toronto...

I'll keep it brief and not bore you with a summary of my resume....

I'm Irish (southern), I'm female and I'm approaching the mid 20s.

I have a degree and other lesser qualifications in Radio Broadcasting.

I have over four years experience in commercial radio in Ireland. A lot of this was on a cover / fill-in basis, but its 4 years nonetheless. Thats 7 years total experience if you count my stints in community radio, student radio, internships and other unpaid projects.

My experience is mainly in producing a radio talk show and newsreading as we call it in Ireland (newscasting / announcing is what its referred to as here I believe!). Other interests are entertainment, feature/documentary making for radio.

Cutting to the chase, I am moving to the GTA the 2nd week of July and am eager to pursue radio / media work here.

My main question:

How does one get employed in an entry level position in radio here? Are there traineeships / paid internships / entry level jobs and where do I find these?

Although I might be likely to be considered for professional-level work in Ireland and the UK, I feel I would need to start from scratch here and any job openings I have seen I would consider myself to be underqualified for. At the same time I would prefer (for financial reasons) not to have to do unpaid work unless its necessary or would lead to paid work.

Any suggestions as to how I go about this? Google hasn't proved entirely helpful..

Thanks

S :)

Apply everywhere. Toronto is the best place in the world to live (in my humble opinion). Maybe someone will hear your work and hire ya.

Just be warned, expect tons of traffic, humid summers and miserable damp and windy (but not snowy, outside the city is a different issue) winters and endless hope for the hockey team to win.

Welcome to Canada, don't forget to apply for OHIP (health card) and bring some good Irish Whiskey from home or Duty Free.

Great thanks for the info.

So I guess it'll be a case of sending my resume to every station in the GTA and hoping for the best. Would be good to know if there was one particular place that might be likely to hire me / newcomers like me but I guess thats unlikely! Maybe I can barter Irish whiskey to get myself employed?!

RE the OHIP, I understood this was for permanent residents only? And not for people like me on a temp Visa.... Would be great if I was wrong though.

As for the miserable damp and windy winters, I am from Ireland so am well used to rain all year round!!! Will have to get used to the temperature drop and humidity though.

From what I know about radio and TV I believe the best path or at least that path that most take is to go to a small town somewhere first and then work your way in to the city.. but I could be wrong.. reading the bios on CTV and CBC etc it seems that is the path that the majority of the successful ones took, Maybe look in London, Hamilton, Oshawa, Barrie, Niagara as well.

I'm here a lot
Also, be ready to do anything. Consider working in the sales or promotion department.

Keep all options open and don't discount ethnic radio stations as well if you want to keep your search within Toronto.

Good Luck.
