Rattle

Be sure all power is off and batteries removed in case it is a screw or other conductive material like a loose solder "ball" or scrap from manufacture that has come adrift.

Try and locate the area it is rattling in and see of you can work it down into the Battery compartment to retrieve it..

If not successful, and you feel confident, open up the case back and keep trying to get that loose item out. :)

Good luck..

well tom,
reluctantly i took off the screws on the back and located the object of noise, a very small silver screw wonder how that came loose. hopefully it didnt affect the antennae connector due to it being a little more loose than usual but i dont know

thanks,
Denny

Denny, that is a problem the 96 has had from the beginning. I had the same thing with mine a couple of years ago when it was fairly new. The screw came out, and nothing was wrong with the radio. That was a huge topic discussed on the Yahoo 96 group. Just wanted to put a litttle levity into what seemed to be a bad thing.

Just where did the small screw BELONG before it came loose?

I have a 96 & if I start hearing something rattling, your experience will make mine easier to deal with!!!!

Were you able to get it back where it belonged OK?

Thanks,

Cool - at least it didn't short something (usually expensive) chip or circuit inside. I was not familiar with the mention thereof in the PRO-96 group. Probably IS one that DOES secure the Antenna connector, based on your observation, Denny.

I still have my PRO-96, even though there is no Digital traffic up here in the North GA woods. Was plenty at Kennedy Space Center and used to stream launch OPS at my http://kscops.com site while I was working there and even while retired and they went digital. Best audio of any portable Scanner of the 10 or so base and Handhelds I own. :)

Have a look at my mess here in GA in the "My ShacK" RR area - Search for W4NOV.. :)

Has NEVER looked like THAT again - Never since!! (ROTFL)

The concensus was that it didn't hurt anything without it being in. The Bad thing was that if it stayed in and shorted out something on one of the boards. If you join the Pro-96 Yahoo group, do a search and you will be able to read about it. Being that it is a nut that holds the BNC connector to the case, and the ground and center are soldered to a board, the screw has nothing to do with that. Three years the end of this month for my 96 and 97. No problems with either radio.

A question concerning my 96, for some reason i used to pick up bibb county trunking sys clear as day and houston county(where i live) not as good. now i dont even pick up bibb and im lucly to pick up houston, im really getting a BIT pissed cuz i dont always want to liisten to other counties that i dont live in. would the screw have had an effect on that? on the external that i got mounted on my metal roof is how i have the scanner recieving, i dont get crap with the rubber duckie that came with it unless in town.

well...

The screw that i found rattling in my scanner apparently didnt make much difference. i decided to open it back up and investigate where it had came from, well i found out where it needed to go and put it back. no difference in the performance so i guesss something else had changed.

I heard a rattly screw in my '96 about a year ago. Opened it, found the hole, put the screw back.
Sounds like a "class problem." My radio has been good so far.

So im takin it when you put it back in it stayed? i found the right place for it and put it back jus didnt tighten as to not damage the circuit board, then a couple days later it came right on out again so i jus left it out. didnt affect the performance of it so i dont c why i need to keep putting it back in if it just keeps coming out continuosly
