Hope you had a chance to hear this one.

Just minutes ago, a bank was robbed in the Eastern District. A description went out over the air and within minutes the three perps were caught along with recovery of their van, the loot and all their weapons. It was a swarm of officers from Eastern, Western, detectives, SOS and Air One that descended on the area. A K9 unit first spotted them ditching the van, gave the descriptions and brought the swarm down upon the fleeing bank robbers.

This was a first rate operation that was made all the better with good communications. The FBI was notified immediately of the robbery and by the time they could get their very first man on the scene, Eastern had everyone in custody. They even had everything the perps had ditched in their escape attempt including a cell phone and a pack of cigarettes and, of course, the weapons they had tossed.

Congratulations to Eastern for a fantastically well done piece of work.

All the activity took place in the area of Veteran's Highway and Brightview or within very short distances from that location. As mentioned, it all happened just before I opened this thread - around 11:00-11:30 or so.

They talk about interunit operational capability not happening fast enough. However, this was two districts, detectives, special ops, K9 and an air unit all very easily coming together on a single channel to prove that this county, as can many others, operate seemlessly when the need arises. It was a textbook perfect example of police work at its best.

The time on my first post was 10/22/04 at 11:45am. CapPun, you can set the time to local time for all postings by selecting "Profile" at the top of the page and then right near the bottom is the time setting. We are currently at GMT -4 and will be GMT -5 when we set the clocks back at the end of the month. Anyway, that will allow all postings to appear in local time format.

More "must hear" scanner stuff....
There was another very exciting event I heard last night on Hardy County WV sheriff freq of 155.70. I came upon it at 11:10 pm when the dispatcher was telling the sheriff's mobile unit that the woman she had on the phone was screaming that someone was breaking into her house. It turned out to be her stepson. The dispatcher is also the call taker. It was so far out in the country that the sheriff didn't arrive at the house for nearly 40 minutes. During that time the dispatcher was describing how the perp was breaking out all the windows in the house. Then he got in and severely beat his father and then his stepmother who was the one on the phone. The woman got back on the line after being beaten (which the dispatcher was hearing) and relayed to the dispatcher that the stepson was outside breaking all the windows out of their car. Dispatcher also relayed to the sheriff that the guy at least owned a gun but it had not been seen up to that point. He was also wanted in Virginia with two outstanding warrants for violent offenses. They described him as being 10-35A. I don't have their 10 codes but, in context, I guess that's some kind of mental condition. I'll say! All I could think of the whole time this was happening was why it's so important to be armed, especially if you're in a remote area far from a quick police response. The whole event was extremely suspenseful and almost sounded like a movie rather than a real terrifying event for the people involved. The sheriff involved in this got a little lost trying to find the house which added time to the event. I got the impression he didn't want to get there too fast. That may be unfair but sometimes you can read into things being said and that's just the impression I got from his questions and discussion along the way.
