I see a note on the LISR Maryland board for Anne Arundel that the county fire transitioned to a 900 mhz system on the first of June. I have wondered why the usual fire tgs had been fairly quiet of late...

Anyway, anyone have any info whether this is correct or not - or was it part of the bio drill?? If it is correct, freqs and talkgroups are needed...

Better break out trunker...

I'm still getting AA County Fire on the old "New" freqs that have been active since around the first of the year. The same ones in the RR Database.

I find this very hard to believe, especially considering all the effort they just put into improving the existing 800 MHz system. Maybe they were using 900 MHz radios on an SMR for the bio-terror drill, although that also seems unlikely.

I'm still hearing AAco Fire on their regular TG's on the 800Mhz system. Is there something new?? What are the freqs? What is LISR?

AA Co

While you guys are talking about AA County 800, I do have a question: I live in Timonium and cannot copy AA with a plug-in 800 MHZ antenna. If I were to invest in a directional TV antenna, rated for 190 Mile range and point it at AA County (with low-loss coax, of course), shouldn't I be able to pull in AA County from here in Timonium....or am I asking too much??

Thanks.

You're asking way too much of a little plug in antenna; even at 800, your range is going to be meager at best.
The mileage claims on TV antennas are generally useless in any case, but maybe...part of the problem you will run into in the Timonium area is the plethoria of pager and other signals downtown. I wouldn't at all be surprised if at times you are suffering from desensing due to overload.
However, that being said, some folks have indeed retrofitted a TV antenna for scanner reception (somewhat like the Grove Scanner beam), and the results are kinda mixed, depending on the construction, elements and (something you've already mentioned) the feedline used.
Having done numerous 4th of July parades for the local ham club downtown in that area, I have firsthand knowledge of all the RF xxxx that exists down there.

If your going to spend the money, you might as well do it right, invest it in a scantenna. I just bought one from here for 49.99. http://www.grove-ent.com/ANT7.html. I live in AA co and was having trouble receiving Balt. Co and city. I put this antenna up on a 15 foot mast from RS and I receive everything very clearly now. It comes with everything you need but the mast wich will cost about 25 bucks at RS.

Either from personal experience or anecdotal evidence, anyone know whether a Scantenna would outperform a run-of-the-mill RS discone?

That might be a good question to pose in the RR forum. I don't know how the Discone compares to the scantenna but I can tell you that I am very happy with the scantenna.

I want to let you know I have had many upon many of stupid RS Discone Antenna's & then I tried a Scantenna it improved my reception 100% but I noticed that it is somewhat directional so I bought another one and put it the other direction. I ran both cables into a BNC T to the back of my scanner and my coverage almost tripled. I can hear New York City from Northern Baltimore Co. If you want to know any further pm me
