Although this page doesn't say it's for the 396XT,

AC Adapter For BCD396T, BR330T, BC346XT - Accessories at Uniden

the link to it comes from this page for the 396XT

BCD396XT Compact APCO 25 Handheld Scanner - Scanners at Uniden

look on the accessories column on the right side of the page, and click "next", and it will show up at the bottom of that accessories column.

Or check here:

Uniden AD-1001 AC Adapter

That link confirms that both scanners take the same adaptor.

You can call the Uniden Parts and tell them you need a AD-1001 ac adapter for a Uniden 396X. They should have this in stock.

Quick update:
I found Sony 4.5V/ 500 mA adapter from my collection and luckily the polarity and plug matches with the scanner's needs. I noticed some clipping audio when the switch was in "charge" mode so I turned it back to "alkaline" mode. I am guessing this is due to low voltage and/or current. The voltage is showing 3.85V which is about the same I get when running off the batteries. Would you guys recommend running the radio this way? Thanks.

I wouldn't use any AFTER MARKET AC adaptor on a 396XT..
I did..i used a Radio Shack 6V..500ma with the proper tip..when i plugged it in i got ILLEGAL VOLTAGE on the display..stoped working and i smelt like something burnt. I had popped a small fuse/capactor in the charging jack. Had to sent it back to Uniden for repair..there are comments all over these forums warning of this problem when using an after market adaptor/charger..
Just my experience...a costly one....
