When using the Uniden BC_VUP program to download firmware updates, be aware that the data is stored on an FTP site. Negotiation between your computer and the site server dynamically assigns a random data port for the information transfer. Since you won't know what that data port will be, you must temporarily disable any port blocking filters that might be turned on in your modem. (Not the same thing as your computer's firewall software.)
Port blocking in the modem itself is a great idea if you know what services you won't be using. It can prevent a certain amount of port snooping. FTP was a great idea, but was invented before the internet became a playground for hackers. Just a FYI.
