    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Accidental Channel Switching/APX7000

Hi, First timer here.
I work for a Federal Agency using the APX7000 series radios. Is there a trick to keep the darn things from constantly changing channels accidentally? EVERY single time I sit down, the channel gets switched from rubbing against my kevlar. I can't really relocate the radio and I'm NOT 'girthy' (160 lbs). Some of my partners use a rubber band with limited success but it looks like s%it.

As Steve Jobs said "You're just holding it wrong".
First, are you using the skinny or fat channel knobs? The skinny ones are much harder to turn accidentally, the fat ones need a rubber o-ring added for more torque.
Other than that, positioning it differently so unintentional rubbing becomes less likely. There are a number of different carrying cases (Motorola isn't the only game in town) that hold the radio a little differently- maybe yours is not the right fit for your mode of carry.
There is however a sure fire FIX that is having your programmer enable channel selector disabled when keypad/controls lock is activated. This would require you to take two deliberate actions to change channels though, which is a PITA to do in an emergency should you need to.

I have a couple of APX 7000s that have the fat channel selector and it seemed to always wobble and it was easy to knock off channel, I took your suggestion and added 0-rings and it works perfectly, it is the same as an APX 7000 that I use for HAM and has a skinny knob, very tight and you can feel the channel clicks easily, thanks for the information on the 0-ring

I have the same problem in our agency. This might work for you. We put the "LOCK" function on the A position of the ABC switch on our APX radios. The end users can switch to the B position, change the channel to what they want, switch back to the A position and the channel is locked in. It's a change in programming, but it works.
