I was fooling around with my 396, and somehow I turned on "Custom Search 8". The radio was scanning that range after the last active system. I don't know how I turned it on, and for the life of me, I couldn't turn it off. I read through the manual (which is virtually useless--must be a translation from Chinese) pages 96 & 97, and still could not turn it off. What I finally did was plug it into my computer and re-download everything--problem fixed. For my future reference---HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU TURN IT ON AND THEN HOW DO I TURN IT OFF ??????

If memory serves me correctly just press the scan button.

You can access the custom search through the menu's or through the function 2 press (and then a few more key strokes).

Only way I ever turned a search on was via the Menu (maybe there is a shortcut that I haven't used). Anyway, to turn it off, just hit Scan and you will resume scanning whatever system(s) you were scanning prior to activating the search. Unless something has gone funky with your 396, that has always worked for me.

Press hold.

Hold down F and scroll to system 8 *or whatever system you want to turn on/off*

While still holding F *should display the system name since you still have F held down* press the vol knob down to lock/unlock.
