Does anyone here know how to activate an IRLP Node using a Yaesu VX-6R? I know it can be done by switching off the Yaesu built in Wires, and going to Manual Tones, but I still have not quite figured out how that is done, nor how to properly do it.

Any help appreciated,
Thanks, and 73's,

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_1_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B206 Safari/7534.48.3)

That is correct, you don't want wires. Ever. I suggest you contact the node owner for details as the nodes can be configured differently and may have different requirements. Most simplex nodes use pl.

Typically on your DTMF keypad you would simply enter the 4 digit node/reflector number to connect and 73 to disconnect.

I have a vx-6r but I have no use for wires, or IRLP.

My local IRLP repeater is about 2 miles from my QTH, seems like a pretty fun technology. Though it's shockingly dead for such a widely connected repeater (As far west as Chicago, and all up and down the east coast). Lately I've been using echolink on my phone/PC to participate in the Breakfast Club Net (355800 *DODROPIN* conference server). It's actually shocking how dead 2m and 220 and 440 are around here actually. :(

No wonder repeaters dead

With Echolink over phone is this really ham radio? What happens when internet goes down or is shut down? IRLP can usually be activated using touch pads for tones to bring up IRLP and Echolink. I haven't looked at irlp.net lately, but they used to have directions on how to access a node. And as the OP said manual tones will access IRLP from a hand held or any radio with DTMF buttons. Or contact look club/person that operates the repeater or simplex IRLP and they will help you in bringing up an IRLP node.

Well what's the difference? Between going into a repeater with an radio, over the net, and out to other repeaters.. Or going over the net, to other repeaters. Apart of course from cutting out an extra step? Oh and since IRLP stand for "Internet Radio Linking Protocol" if the net is down there is no IRLP... With no nearby repeaters running Echolink or carrying the Breakfast Club Net (which is what I do with Echolink) it really narrows down your options don't you think? If the internet is down or shut off, I'll grab my mic on an HF rig and head to a 40 or 20 meter net or digital mode (or somewhere else between 80 and 6 meters)

Well, when the internet goes down you'll still be able to contact local hams over your local repeater. Try that with Echolink.

I use both, BTW, for quite different purposes and reasons. For one thing I hesitate to tie up a widely used repeater for just my own preference when I can use Echolink instead.
