My family will be traveling to just south of Fort Wayne, and wondering about good active repeaters? I use the 146.700 repeater when we get in range, but are there any active ones in southern Indiana along I-65, and I-69 around the Marion area? Thank you and 73,

About the time you get out of comfortable range for the 146.700 in Indy, try 146.730 in Muncie. It's got decent coverage from just south of Anderson (Somewhere and the 15-18 mile marker, to well north of Muncie, and then you'll be in range of the 146.790 in Marion.

If you get on the Muncie repeater, give KB9NPU, Dick a call. He's a sight impaired ham who monitors all the time and is just a delight to talk to!

I was once told to just monitor 146.520 and would probably have better luck. I don't think so. I have made a 400 mile road trip on 52 and have yet to make a contact on the interstate.

It seems unlikely that anyone would get a simplex contact on 146.52 while driving on the highway, unless someone else coincidentally was trying to use it as a call-channel in an emergency or something.

146.520 is used on the road. It is a great idea to set up a memory bank in your 2meter/440 radio for this freq. You never know what you are going to hear on it.

It's in my scan list in my mobile and I never hear anything on it in Central Indiana, and no one ever responds to my calls.

146.520 is in both my base and mobile and I hear radio traffic on it during the morning and afternoons when people are tired of waiting to use repeaters that are allways busy.146.520 is busy in the Metro Indianapolis/Marion. Our hams that are truck drivers use it all the time along with others. We have (2) hams that move steel from Indainapolis to Ohio everyday. They use 146.520.between Indianapolis and Ohio.

I do recall getting a station on 52 once around the I-465/I-69 interchange. There was a traffic backup and tried to find out what was going on, go to find it was a wreck.

I guess it depends on the time of day. It was in the evening hours when I made that contact on 52. I try to use 52 all the time around the interstates around here and seldom get a response, same as some of the local repeaters.

Thank you for this info. I will program these before we leave and I will try giving a call out when we are coming through.

I will likely just put in these frequencies and scan, as compared to driving and try to do them that way. I enjoy getting on the 146.700, as our local repeater here is also 146.700, haha, but when I get on I always have people coming back to me. Now I just need responses from the Kentucky forum.

Driving from Philly to Jax on I-95 then to Phoenix on I-10 in Jan '12, I heard one call on .520, but as I was just pulling off 95 to get gas, I didn't answer until I got back on the freeway, and I didn't get a reply.

But there is a regular group active on .520 here in the Phoenix Valley, and supposedly there's a group active in the Las Vegas Valley, with a remote base to boot, as well. So activity is going to vary nationwide.
