Depends on which active antenna you use. I've heard some good results have been had with users of the Sony AN-LP1 (I think that's the right model number) and a similar unit by Kiwa. (I think AOR has one too, come to think of it). Such units don't have the high uncontrolled gain that some of the cheaper active antennas have, and the loop designs help cancel some noise problems. However, they are all kinda pricey.
Active antennas have the potential to cause more problems than they are worth, particularly in urban areas. If there's no way to cut the gain down (unlike the models above, all of which I think do have a way to control the gain), you risk overloading the portable, which is not really designed to handle that much. That can result in a lot of distorted MW stations (maybe some HF, too) appearing in places you don't want, and 2 or more stations overlapping each other, which are all signs of overloading.
You might want to see if there's a ATS909 Sangean Yahoo group (I'm pretty sure there is at least one); they might be able to make a good recommendation. The other question, of course, is why would you want an active antenna, when a passive one is much more likely to work better? 73s Mike

After a little digging, I wandered over to my friend Ulis Fleming's RadioIntel site, and one of his pages has numerous ATS909 related links...

RadioIntel RadioInfo page

There are a few mailing lists devoted to it and the RS DX398 (similar radio); these are among the best places to go to find out performance tips and what antenna(s) work best with the 909. Of course, as I mentioned above, you must consider your own environment before making any decisions.

Thanks for the input Mike. I do subscribe to the yahoo ats 909 group and RS 398 group. I did post the same question there and got no response. I have not rigged a long wire yet because I have heard so much about overloading the radio and had hoped that an active antenna with controllable gain might be the solution.

I'll keep looking around. I do appreciate your help.

If you do string some wire for an antenna, don't make it too long - depending on your environment, 40 or 50 foot would probably be as much as you'd need. You may need to shorten it up some if you find you are still overloading, but that's a decent ballpark for a starting wire antenna (notice that I didn't call it a long wire, which is a completly different animal....) 73s Mike
