The county obtained 7 licenses in 12/15/2003 in anticipation of constructing a new radio system.
These licenses were for use in the 800Mhz spectrum. The system was never constructed, and 4
of the seven licenses were cancelled due to failure to construct.
The remaining licenses have been pressed into service and are being used to repeat some
of the low band activity in the county. This equipment appears to have been purchased used and
placed on the air in conventional mode as listed in the data base.
Motive ? I personalty think this was done to test coverage, but more likely is being used to occupy the
remaining valid licensed frequencies so claim can be made regarding their use. The remaining
licenses expire 12/13/2013, so time to develop and implement the system is getting very short.
An article in the local newspaper recently mentioned the commissioners approved payment to
Motorola for the system study. There is no doubt the commissioners have been in favor of
providing a new system, however, the projected cost could be more than half the yearly county budget,
and no funding has be acquired. (To my knowledge !)
This system would be a tough go for a small county with limited funds.
Will post info is anything surfaces....
