Advanced Receiver Research P30-1000 Preamp

Hey Group.

Been trying several different preamps on my RS Discone @ 35' to help bring in some distance aviation traffic, not really finding anything that works good. I was thinking about adding this one at the antenna: ARR P30-1000/11VD

Has anyone tried this?

Also thinking about a yagi instead of a Discone.

Ideas?

If you live in an RF rich environment it will produce all kinds of extra signals to clog your receiver, unless you put a band pass filter in front of it. If all you want is VHF air band you can do a lot better on noise figure, a preamp for that specific band should be well under 1dB. If you get one of these filters:

you can shop for preamps with a better noise figure and you could probably get by with a lower 1dB compression point. Stick everything in a box at the base of the antenna and it should work well.
