OK...My son is a police officer in a town about 20 miles away.they are trunked and They have a mix of digital and analog in the dept. I know i need a Digital scanner so here are my questions

Which is the best/most reliable scanner?
Do i need an external antenna?
I plan to broadcast here.

I live in the town of Wake Forest just north of Raleigh and my son work for Durham City PD.

Any advice is appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Radioreference

It is difficult to say. I'd get the scanner first and try it. If you cannot hear Durham City then look into a small directional antenna.
The problem is systems are normally designed to cover only the area they serve. 20 miles is a bit far. If they have a strong system you might hear them. If not, I'd look into a beam that has at least 8 elements.

You are possibly out of range of the Durham TRS.
There is a chance that you will be able to pick it up.
Ask in the NC forum if there's anyone in your town that can pick it up.
As mentioned above, there is a good chance that with a directional antenna you will be able to pick it up (if you can't otherwise).
You are going to be in range of P25 VIPER (probably), and Motorola VIPER (definitely).

Choosing a scanner is like picking from Chevy/Ford, or Windows/Mac. It all boils down to your personal preference.
Everyone will say something different...
The digital scanners that you can pick from are:
Pro-106 (handheld) My Pick
Pro-197 (base) My Pick
BCD396XT (handheld)
BCD996XT (base)
GRE Psr-500 (handheld)
GRE Psr-600 (base)
Research to find out what you like!
