If anyone heard unusual conversations on Portland's trunked system this week it may have been this:

Several weeks before being used by the public, Portland Fire & Rescue conducted
rescue training on the new aerial tram system being built by the city and OHSU,
the Oregon Health & Sciences University.

Tram car leaving upper station at OHSU hospital.
The car is about 170 feet above the ground here. As it travels the 3300 feet to the lower
station at the OHSU Research Center on the bank of the Willamette river, it is 125 above
ground at its lowest point.

In addition to the normal utility company power, there are two backup power systems.
If all three systems fail, a rope is dropped from the car and 2 firefighters are raised up
to the car to assist passengers into a harness (we call it a diaper) and they are lowered one by one.
