i know people have been asking for a firmware update that would add AGC to the pagers, my question is the hardware in the pager capable of actually doing it.

To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I've seen requests for something that handles the situation where different talkgroups have significantly different audio levels. AGC, as I know it, doesn't do that - rather it automatically adjusts *RF* gain based on signal strength, to avoid overloading the receiver. That doesn't do anything to the audio level in a digital signal. It may be technically possible to do something in DSP to automatically adjust (or at least limit) audio level. Uniden scanners allow configuration of a "volume offset" per talkgroup.

ok, the issue im having happens on the same TG, the mobile units are all one audio level but the dispatcher blows the roof off my house. I thought thats what AGC did, (even though it stands for automatic gain control, i kinda wondered why that would help the volume).

That would be a welcome addition to my "wish list" too. It would be nice to set the volume on the radio, and let the radio automatically maintain the same volume for ALL units.
What you're looking for here is a limiter for AF, or audio frequency, gain. The Uniden 536, among others, has an available Audio AGC circuit, but it's either on or off, and can't be tweaked.
