AGC, to gain, or not to gain

That is the question.

So, I use my scanners in my car, and it gets noisy. The scanners are usually at 75% volume or so. My understanding of the AGC is limited.......does it not only boost low volume calls, but also lower high volume calls? I ask because when I turn the volume to max, I don't want the volume level to go down at all. Does the 996XT AGC leave the high volume stuff as is, and boosts the low volume stuff at max volume?

Just trying to figure out what settings to use. Thanks!
