May have posted in the wrong forum so I am reposting here to try to get help (delete if not allowed).

I recently purchased an Ailunce HD1 to replace my old radios and to start using DMR. It's been a great radio so far and communication on analogue is great; however, I am really struggling to get the hang of DMR. I have the repeater frequencies, color code, and other information programmed. I downloaded contacts, and imported talk groups, but I am still not really sure how it works and what needs to be placed where in the settings.

I either receive a "repeater fail" message or I transmit with no response. I attached pictures from the CPS.

How do the talk groups work? Do I need to have all of the talk groups designated on every repeater channel? If a repeater only shows TG1, is that the only talk group that will be used? What is the purpose of RX group? Same question as above, do I need to have all of them added on the channel?

Please let me know if you see any obvious problems. Any advice, information, or suggestions are appreciated.

Ok, first off, it looks like you have your talkgroups in your contacts list. Talkgroups are the "channels" and contacts are the ID numbers of the people you are talking to. Also, I may be wrong, but I don't think the networks will allow your ID of MED3, R-12 to go through the system. That may be another problem your having. That should be your dmr ID issued to you. Hope this helps get you started on the right track.

For the HD1 CPS, talkgroups are entered in the Priority Contacts screen (as you have done), but be aware that different networks might use different talkgroup IDs and different repeaters might be connected to different networks. For example, the WorldWide TG for DMR-MARC might be TG1, but the Worldwide TG for Brandmeister might be TG91. Also, be aware that any given DMR repeater will only allow connection to whichever network(s) and talkgroup(s) that have been programmed by the repeater owner. I also agree that you might require a proper personal DMR ID number in your ID Setting screen. Finally, be aware that once all your CPS settings are correct and loaded into the HD1, you still might not connect to the repeater if you're not close enough for the repeater to hear your radio.

Hello,

Thank you KK4ELO and Chief21 for the replies. After some heavy google searching and a lot of trial and error I think I got it figured out. The ID setting just displays the radio name. The ID setting "MED-3, R-12" automatically corresponds to my DMR ID and is just an option for if I wanted to loan this radio to someone so it would automatically use their DMR ID.

On this CPS, the "priority contacts" is actually where you list the talkgroups (poor wording on the software manufacturer's part). It seems that my main issue is the same problem that I encountered when using analogue: my building is already is a low reception area, and my office is very unfriendly to radio signals.

I have since purchased a hotspot and have had a good experience with it. I am successful in Tx/Rx on TG9990 and have logged a few contacts for some local/regional talk groups.

One remaining question I have is regarding the DMR repeaters. In the response from Chief21, you mentioned that "any given DMR repeater will only allow connection to whichever network(s) and talkgroup(s) that have been programmed." On the repeaterbook screenshot that I posted of the Wauka Mountain - KA3JIJ specs, if I click "Open Talkgroup View," it shows "TS1 TG1." With this information, I am confident in my assumption that I need to have timeslot one programmed, and that TG1 is a static talkgroup on this repeater.

Question: Does this information mean that TG1 is the only talkgroup that can be communicated through on this repeater, or does it simply imply that TG1 is the only static talkgroup, and other talkgroups can be activated by PTT?

According to the KA3JIJ page on Repeaterbook...

Both DMR MARC NA (TG3) and ATL Metro (TG8) full time sharing TS1. Use PTT to access any other TG. PTT will activate the TG for 15 minutes.

This suggests that DMR-MARC TG3 (N. America), as well as TG8 (ATL Metro), can also be accessed on TS1. The second sentence is a bit vague as to which other talkgroups can be accessed by PTT, but I assume they must be DMR-MARC talkgroups rather than Brandmeister.
