I have been thinking about getting into ham radio and was wondering if there are any places that sell mobile ham radios in the Akron/ Northeast Ohio area? I'd like to look at a few and get an idea of price and capabilities of different radios.

Check AES Home page. They have a store in Wickliffe.

I have done a lot of business with them. Great shop, wide selection.

Ditto. I always made a point of visiting AES in Wickliffe when visiting my parents in Shaker Heights (before they moved south). Always enjoyed stopping by there, staff was always helpful, had a nice display of equipment to fool around with for "try before you buy" purposes.

Universal Radio in Columbus is also very good if you get down that way (or buy online); very knowledgeable staff, good stock on hand, great displays of stuff to play with.

Ok cool thank you guys. I'm gonna try and go check out AES this weekend. I see they have the Larsen scanner antenna I want in there catalog, seems like a perfectly good excuse to me.

In addition to finding tons of stuff online, you'll find that an hour or two spent studying a ham magazine such as QST will give you a pretty good overview of what's available in ham gear these days. You'll also save a lot of gas starting out this way.

True, but there's just something about getting in there and playing with the dang things, especially since most of the ham stores put most or all models on display for playing purposes. I always play first; if the ergonomics aren't there, I'm not even going to read the specs on the radio, because it wouldn't be fun to use. If the ergonomics are there, then I'll read the specs. However, most radios from reputable manufacturers these days meet much the same general technical specs, so the ergonomics are going to be a key deciding factor.
