I'm new to scanning and need to know what I need to look for in a scaner. I dont want to spend an arm and a leg. I want to be able to hear the trunked radio system the BPD use and also the fire and rescue.

To monitor Burlington you'll need any of the digital scanners available on the market - they are a pricey investment but well worth it if you want to know what is going on in the city. If you can survive just listening to county units then a cheaper model will suffice. As far as frequencies they are all in the database, and I have found it to be extremely accurate.

Scanner Models

If you're looking for digital, there are the Radio Shack Pro-96, the Uniden BC296D (soon to be discontinued), and the Uniden BCD396T in the handheld market.

The desktop/mobile lineup includes the Radio Shack Pro-2096 and Uniden's BC796D.

Remember, as EnchantedWizard said you will need a digital trunktracker to listen to Burlington City.

Sounds real good.

Is the audio fed straight from the scanner into the computer soundcard?

It is not distorted or anything, just stronger sounding than most feeds.

Wonder if you processed the audio in anyway.

I have the sound output on the scanner going to the input on sound card. i am compressing the audio at 32.02 kbs mono .Via Windows Media Encoder 7.1. Most live scanners I have heard try to save bandwidth and compress at 19 kbs. And volume is set to 11 0'clock on my live scanner..
