As I understand it, part of the issue with digital scanners is that they require a specific demodulator which has to be licensed. That adds to the cost right there; and unlikely the license fee will go down anytime soon. Perhaps someone else here can comment on this aspect of this topic.

Yeah I wouldn't hold my breath. If one were to come across there for less than $200 I would make sure the discription says it works and everything. Some people do sell nonworking scanners for "parts." on there.

It seems that every time a new system comes out, the scanner mfg's come out with a new TOY. With the "open sky" system on the move (such as Milwaukee and Las Vegas), does that mean another TOY will be made and at what cost. It's a never ending game to sell new TOYS. As you can see, the size change from a 296 to a 396. And if you noticed, the 396 can do so much more and the size is half of the 296. Go figure. Any way, you will not find a digital TOY for $200.00................Sorry

Open Sky won't be on any scanner, it's a proprietary scheme. Not sure where you are going with the "toy" reference, but in any case due to licensing you will never see a digital scanner for under $200 unless a desperate EBay seller hits.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know who holds the license, and what the fee per scanner is? Digital scanners seem to cost about twice as much, (or more), as analog ones. Could the licensing fee really be driving the scanner price up over 100%?

remember when trunking came out? Moto Trunked scanners were like 500 bucks for a pop. and that was just for I/II, not even LTR or EDACS.

now they're 100 bucks, and can listen to more than one system at a time.

i expect p25 work the same way in terms of price.

Licensing for the P25 code is about $240 per unit if I recall.

So when a RS employee buys one for $280, what does that mean? The rest of the scanner is only $40?????

The first Trunk Tracking scanner was the Uniden Bearcat BC235. I had one, and it wasn't anywhere near $500.

Less than that. RS's cost fot the PRO-2096/96 is less than $240. By comparing costs between the PRO-97 and PRO-96, it would appear the liscensing fee is somewhere in the low $100 range.
