That nifty Mass-Man.

"52" simplex is the only thing I listen to when driving anywhere away from home.
Several years ago a friend and I drove from Wsahington DC to Los Alamos New Mexico. On that trip we took along a 2 metre/440 transceiver-- and had a lot a lot of fun meeting hams along the way ;) ----
I posted it here in the Forums, lo, 5 years (??!!) ago....wow, time flew !!

Also where I live is full of Summits on the Air (SOTA) activity ---- "52" is never a dull frequency.

Enjoyed your east to west chronicles from 5 years ago! Planning DFW to COS this summer but hopefully nary an interstate will be involved! 52 from the top of Capulin is now a “must.”

I am glad you enjoy'd it ;) ! !

I had not really re-visited the"Santa-Fe trail" trip it until I saw your post... that trip was really quite simple, but a big part of its was the fun of exploration ---exploring what ham radio, 2 metre's in particular- can be.
If I encouraged others to take to the air, to the open road- and explore what a wonderful hobby we have, well..... it was worth-while :) .

Meanwhile I have some 'Side-Kicks' eager for the snows to melt-- so we (?)**---they !!..... can take to the summits and SOTA ! away the summer :).

May be missing a lot of new amateurs. I say this as in my area a lot of new hams are on air with hand helds. This greatly limits distance on simplex. But using repeaters gives these new amateurs greater distances.

When I first got my ticket I was poor and could not afford an HF rig. I put my shack on the second story and using the shortest possible length of RG-8 used a homebrew 1/4 wave attached to the chimney. My first ham rig was an ICOM 2200H and I still have it. I had many good QSO's on the local machines but really loved simplex most. So many hours I ragchewed on it. Higher in the band than the frequencies listed by the OP but here in the mountains of WNC working multiple states is easy with moderate power. I have worked Wilmington, NC as well as Myrtle Beach SC from the Blue Ridge Parkway on 10 watts with a homebrew 3 element Quad. Good times.
Its dead here now which makes me sad. Using a good HT on the 6k+ altitude is hilarious as machines from 4 states reply!!!

Now I have a shack on the ground floor fed with LMR-400 and still use a small antenna. A Comet GP-3 with an ICOM 2730A.
And activity is so low it is horrible. I got my ticket in 2007 and hold an Extra class since that year.

The vast majority of my QSO's are on HF. An FTDX5000MP rocks hard for DXing.

I actually miss rising at 4 AM so I could work into distant machines via temp inversion on 2 meters. I have worked machines in Ohio, Kentucky,Georgia,Tennessee, way east in NC (Raleigh),and South Carolina into nearly Columbia with 25 watts.
I was so poor at the time I only had a 10 amp power supply and did not dare use 50 watts.

I miss the high activity on the machines as well as simplex here in Asheville, NC. Its pitiful now.

If you have a lot of activity in your area...be thankful. 73 Y'all.

Several years ago I only had 52 simplex and 58 simplex that my county used for backup.

One day I was on a road trip and put my radio in two meter simplex. I heard way more traffic than I had on any of the repeaters. After I got home I reprogrammed my radio with all of the two meter simplex and they a us much more traffic there.

I often have my 2 meter radio sitting on 146.520 at home. I'm amazed at the amount of traffic on it during the day. Lots of people here in the L.A. area love to just run on that frequency.

I’ve had more and better QSOs on 146.52/55/58 the past year or so than on repeaters! On road trips more responses to my CQs!
Most fun on VHF FM in a long time!
Glad to hear it! 2m simplex is dead around here. There is a bit of repeater chatter, but not that much--and what chatter there is, the French-speaking hams are far more active than the English-speaking ones.

I have to add that 2m is almost dead here in WNY. I've been absent for probably 15+ years and was surprised with the change.
There is some activity on 440, but most of that seems be be relay stations. :(
