Greetings.

I will be traveling to Alaska in September and started pre-planning my trip. I have a Uniden BCD463HP handheld scanner and looking at the ALMR system it appears that a custom bandplan is needed. Has anyone successfully programmed the BCD436Hp or BCD536HP for this system? If so can you share the correct entries for programming including system type and bandplan?

Thank you.
Mark

The ALMR system broadcasts the band plan over the control channel, which the x36HP should have no trouble processing. No need to enter a custom band plan, in fact it would likely either be detrimental, or would get overwritten by the control channel data anyway.

Okay. So just enter it as a standard P25 system then?

ALMR is partly encrypted. For example, State Troopers. The Municipality of Anchorage encrypts both police and fire on their 700Mhz system. Lots of things aren't encrypted but not the things I'm interested in. I stopped bothering to take a scanner on trips to AK. Ham radio yes - always have an HT with me.

Yeah, they should change some of the outdated information on the ALMR page here to “you only need a custom band plan if you have a really old unit”. Otherwise, all the latest radios can decide what’s needed as long as you’re monitoring the proper control channel. And like ‘ko6jw_2’ said, the most important and interesting stuff is encrypted by the police state up here…

What others have said - no need to program any tables in. Depending on where you are traveling to, there may be more or less stuff to listen to - feel free to let the group know and we can assist. You will find that most LE traffic is encrypted, but it's not always the case.
