I do SW in the spring and summer, but move to AM when it begins to stay dark late enough in the morning...... and today (Fri Aug 5th) I had to get up at an ass o clock time thats way earlier then Id like, but I was chompin at the bit to get some AM DX in.

My first log of the 2022-2023 AM DX Season is...............

the 5kw non directional 1107khz Tauranga relay of "Today FM" New Zealand. About 7000 miles give or take a few dozen miles. Not very strong, but between 1115 and 1200UTC, I had several understandable fade ups including a long snippet of "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins leading into news at 1200UTC.

1107kHz Tauranga, NZ isn't new or even uncommon for me. In early fall (which is what were really in, based on temps) through late fall and again in late winter, this signal whose tower is right near the water is a regular catch and sometimes, very good too.

I will use this thread to update everyone with my logs/catches and audio that I record of what I hear.

I use a CC Crane Skywave (non SSB model) and this antenna:

That one is as impressive as the New Zealand stations.

KMBY is a little pip-squeak of a station, 1KW into a single vertical antenna that is sitting behind an ice cream shop on Cannery Row. When the tide is in, the concrete base is sitting in the Monterey Bay.
I live not too far away and it's nearly impossible for me to hear at night due to so many other low power stations on the same frequency all bouncing off the upper atmosphere and vying for access to my radio.

I'm probably the only one who says "Ehh" at 1kw from 2200 miles away... lol. I love my logging of KMBY, but I like my NZ logs better :)

I've got some audio to post finally.. its not bad for only 1KW non directional at 7000 miles, its getting hit hard by a het from KKEA 1540 Honolulu and I just couldnt quite null it out despite my second FSL.

SEN Sydney Trackside 1539khz Tue aug 30 1330 to 1415 UTC:

Audio clip #1, from Tue Aug 30th at 1332UTC:

Audio clip #2 from 1337UTC:

Audio clip #3: SEN TRackside Sydney 1539kHz Tue Aug 30, 2022 1349UTC
This is a 35 minute clip ,but it gets alot better in the last 10 to 11 minutes

It’s been pretty dismal till today here in Alaska.

I’ve had my first logging this season if A3Z 1017 in Tonga.

Of note, I’ve also had 2NC 1233 Newcastle, NSW at just the right time with the ABC News top of hour fanfare.

I’ve had short but decently ok snippets of 4BH 1116, Today FM 1107KHz and 4TAB 1008Khz

And there’s Today FM on 1107kHz again with a live service for Queen Elizabeth from the UK at 1432UTC

I wouldn't call this mediocre, but close.. I've had all of these signals before and much stronger for longer periods of time than I had them today

Wed Sept 21.. Japan, Japan and oh my, more Japan!!

Not usually what i go for, but I could tell stuff was way better then normal so I started tuning around

One of the Japanese 1404's, running one of those all night laugh track shows as i call it. Likely JQOL.

NHK repeaters on 1386, 1521, 1593 and 1602.. and very very well at that.

1197 JOWL, confirmed thanks to matching audio to 1287 and getting a top of hour time tone and ID.

1368 JOTS thanks to matching audio to 1287 JOHR, and this being the only possible 1368.

Alot of what was heard today was upper band and pretty low power!

DX From Thu night Sept 22

KHHO doing nicely to beat semi local KICY
KKOH wiping the floor with semi local KNOM
XEKAM 950 coming in nicely over never very strong KJR Seattle
KGB 760 mostly loud and clear for a few mintues in the second half of the 9pm hour.

DX for Fri. morning Sept 23
1206 Yanbian was super great most of the morning. 945 was great some of the time. 981 was super great most of the time. I had CNR1 on 1251 fair well on and off.

I had some Japan stuff, the usual JOHR was mostly great most of the time, JOWF was kinda ok some of the time. The other Japanese weren’t very good except some of the big guns.

If you thought that "the ass crack of dawn was early", this is even earlier.. i was up at 3am a few times early in august.. i am NOT a morning person

SDR revolutionized the way I DX the AMBC band. I used to get up at odd hours of the night to listen, but no more. Now I record the entire AM band every day from dusk to dawn while I'm sleeping and scan it the next day at a convenient time.
