That is somewhat of a dumb question.

But is it common for a law enforcment agency to switch between AM and FM?


The county sheriff/deputies, sometimes use AM for their repeater input as opposed to FM.
I have seen it only twice.

Are you sure?

And how long ago?

AM has not been used in the part 90 bands in a LONG time.

I don't even know where they would get (Legal) equipment.

pretty sure...
once was a few weeks ago (might have been as much as a month), and another time today..


basically I was able to pickup the input frequency, and it was all garbled and sounded funny, so I hit mode, to put it in AM Mode, and I was able to hear it clearly.

Sounds like you were slightly off frequency, and the AM mode allowed slope detection which is much less center frequency dependant than FM.

Frequency for input is 156.03

I even added 156.03 as AM in there so I would just have to press manual, and up arrow if it stops on the FM and it is actually AM.

Welll I would bet you it is not AM.

Hard to say exactly what is happening.

I would think that maybe their equipment is off frequency, or your scanner has a problem.
There has not been any AM equipment built for that band since the 1950's
