Without going into too much detail, there are two major bands on scanner that are in AM mode: the VHF aircraft band and the UHF military aircraft band (found on fewer scanners). Both are AM mode. The VHF band is 108 - 136 MHz and the mil band is 225 - 380 MHz. Some high-end scanners pick up shortwave as well, which is AM mode from 0 - 28 MHz. And of course the CB radio band is from 26.965 - 27.405 MHz and is AM for the most part. Just about everything else is FM, either regular FM, wideband FM (tv broadcast), or narrowband FM (newer systems). Hope that helps.

DeS, the MODE is not always frequency dependent.

Mode is AM, FM, NFM, WFM, SSB, CW, FSK, RTTY and so on...
