Howdy,
I bought a Ruff Ryder Hyper Gain 144/440mhz Mobile
Model 1432 from MFJ at the ham fest a week ago.
I went to a local ham radio store and they told me
they didnt think it that they would have sold me this
antenna I bought from mfj. Can anyone tell me
if this will be a good antenna or not? Thanks

The reason im asking this because the guy that runs the ham radio
store had an major attitude for no reason towards me and my dad.
We werent rude to him or his employee's. The reason
I bought the antenna is because I like how it receive's
more better than the smaller antenna I use to run.
Any answer's?

Maybe because you did not buy it from him.

Little specialty shops, like Ham stores live or die by their sales.

There is also a certain amount of "brand bias" among some folks, leading to opinions like "anything made by MFJ is junk" or "the only good HF radio is a Ten-Tec".

Take it all with a big grain of salt, and repay the rudeness of the store by spedning your money somewhere else.

Thanks Guy's im really happy with the antenna I bought from
mfj, I wish I understood why that feller had to be rude
to someone he didnt know. From way it look everything
in the store was over price sky rocketed. I couldnt afford
anything in the store. Dont get me wrong they had alot
of nice things like scanners, antennas and radios.

If I understand you correctly, you bought an MFJ antenna from a hamfest, and then went to a local ham shop and asked them if it was a good antenna? Why wouldn't you ask them this BEFORE you bought it? If you believed that it would be a good antenna, then why ask them at all? Like someone else said, they were probably ticked at you because you didn't buy an antenna from them.

I did asked the guys that we're there at the ham fest
for mfj. They both said it will be a good antenna. The
reason I went to the ham radio store to see if
they had a bigger magnetic mount to hold the
antenna because the magnetic mount that
has to be used for the antenna didnt hold the
antenna up it kept falling. So I went up there
and the manager saw the antenna and was
checking it out and thats when he said
I wouldnt think I woulda give you this
antenna.

MFJ has a "rep" among many amateurs, including those that actually sell ham equipment. To them, MFJ is short for "More F***ing Junk". Certainly not true for much of the MFJ line, but like all biases, it has attained a life of it's own. They (MFJ) reportedly engage in what some consider to be questionable business practices, such as stockpiling backorders until it's worth their while to get another batch built and shipped to them.

I'm not saying this is true, but this is part of the reason that many hams don't like MFJ. I myself have had mostly good dealings with MFJ. When buying from any dealer, do the research before you buy. And don't expect a dealer to say kind things about something you bought from somebody else.

One final comment: If you spent time picking the dealer's brain about what kind/type of antenna to buy, then went somewhere else to buy the antenna, you ripped him off. His knowledge and expertise is part of his stock in trade. His "consulting fee" so to speak, is the money he makes on the sale of items. If you're lucky enough to have a local ham dealer, you should buy from him as much as possible, or pretty soon you won't have a local ham dealer!

Here's to your final comment:
I knew what I wanted when I went to ham fest and only
mfj had it because I looked around at the ham fest
before I went into the building's. Then I bought
the magnetic mount deal also but when I got antenna
and the mount setup and riding home the mount wasnt
sticking at all it kept falling off. I called the 800 number
for mfj enterprises and they told me to send it back to them
or go to they're dealers like ham radio store. Then I called
the store on the phone they told me and they can replace it
but i have to pay the diffrence because they didnt have
the bigger magnet. Then the guy came over that was
runnin the store he said i wouldnt belive I would sold
you this. You shoulda came over to our booth. Then
thats when he poped off with his attitude

OK, fair enough. The only ham store close to me (within a hundred+ miles) closed after people would use the owner's long experience, then go buy on the internet to save a few bucks. Now I have to buy at a major hamfest if I want to touch before I buy. I'm a strong believer in supporting local businesses. Sure, they cost a bit more, because they are local. OK, off my soapbox.

I'm not familiar with the antenna, so I don't know how big it is. Some mag mounts work well, and others don't. I keep some around for emergency/portable use, but don't rely on them for normal use. In the long run you might want to consider a more permanant style of mount, if possible. A hard-mounted antenna is less likely to "grow legs" if you know what I mean.

Yeah, that's alot of antenna for the size mag mount pictured. SO-239 connector, I take it? If you don't have any luck with MFJ, Diamond makes a pretty good one, the K702M, the base is 6 3/8" in diameter. Not cheap at $50, but good quality.

Comet makes some nice semi-permanant mounts, for rain gutter, trunk lip, rear hatch, etc. If you don't have one, go to Amateur Electronic Supply's website and request their catalog. All sorts of good stuff, including the mounts I mentioned.

Good luck with the antenna.

Mark,
I appreciate it the link I'll make sure I browse over the
website and see what I can come up with. I know
the antenna part is heavy it must weigh a good
5lbs. Other than that im happy with it. 73's Jamie
