Hello Group,
Anyone have experience with the Ambient Weather WS-5000 weather station? Thoughts on it's performance & accuracy.
Thank you!
Ambient makes usually good equipment, from what little I know.
I've had some earlier series (most recently the 2902s), and the only real issue I ever had was the anemometer. The 2902 chronically underreported the windspeed (usually by as much as 5x), but all other measurements were pretty consistent with other vendors in our region. If you looked at the tools online, and searched by brand, you could see everyone who had an Ambient 2902 had a drastically different windspeed.
I actually contacted them when we had a particularly bad wind storm and the device just shat the bed, in terms of wind speed. Trees down in the neighborhood, someone lost most of a roof, and my meteorologist neighbor measured a straight line wind gust of 81mph on his personal hardware. 8 hours of high winds that day and the 2902 never registered higher than 16mph. Not a single device in our zipcode made by them bested 20mph. The kids today call that "sus".
Their tech support
swore that there was nothing wrong with the anemometer, and told us we could buy another component - as it was out of warranty...then their firmware started showing "multiplier" options for windspeed in "select situations" in later revisions. I never gave it too much care after maxing the multiplier at x3 and calling it good enough.
Not suprising that this new top flight hardware from them has a new sensor for that measurement, I'd be willing to bet they've specifically addressed that issue.
