I volunteered for the Ride for Roswell a few years back. The cop I shared the station with said my APX-7000 was better than his radio. Looked like he had an XTS-5000 then. I wondered if they stuck with that or went APX or some other direction like the Kenwood NX-5300s.

If I recall correctly, they had XTS1500 or 2500 when they switched. Regardless, if you dig through their photos on Facebook, you'll see they have APX 6k's now (or 8k).... I have only personally seen TWO - NX-5300's in field in WNY, both were being used as demos, one agency (mine), didn't go with them and stuck with APX for the future purchases, the other was still demo'ing it.

why can I only hear the Amherst pd cars but not dispatch? I have my radio set for NAC 29A at 424.300 mhz.
Clear as day, full conversations on the posted freq. Like k2hz said, sounds like you got the repeater input programmed in as you receive channel.

The 785D is far too old of a scanner to invest that much in. Even with the P25 board, the scanner can only decode conventional P25 or P25 talkgroups on a Motorola Type II (3600) system...it cannot trunk track P25 (9600) trunked systems. The 796D is still viable as the P25 decoding was integrated into the scanner's design, and it can trunk track P25 (9600) systems. Neither model will support narrowbanding, so they're a bit less useful for proper VHF and UHF analog reception.

I know a lot of people get very nostalgic and sentimental when it comes to old scanners and radios they own, but at a certain point investing any money into them very quickly becomes a losing proposition. Better to put that $184 towards the purchase of a modern scanner that is much more capable.

update to my Amherst pd issue. I am still not able to reliably receive Amherst pd. I have a unden BCD436hp with a WSMA-801 antenna. The radio was programmed via sentinel using radio reference data base. I confirmed Amherst pd is set on 424.300 with NAC of 29A and NFM. I am in Cheektowaga ny so I am not very far from Amherst at all. As a matter of fact I have a vertex VX_p824 uhf radio that picks up Amherst loud and clear yet the uniden scanner next to it does not receive anything, Other than the antenna I am at a loss why I can not hear anything., Every other dept on the scanner comes in. Also, when I put the WSMA-801 antenna on my vertex vX-p824 radio Amherst comes in lout and clear. So i am thinking it is not the antenna. Any suggestions??

You do have the service type "Law Dispatch" enabled on your service types, correct?
If so, then try tuning it using the quick search function on the 436hp. Hit Channel, type in the frequency, hit channel. (Don't hit enter).
That will tune it in, bypassing all the programming, and will verify the issue is with the receiver and not the programming.
Also can you receive anything else on the scanner?

yes I have "law dispatch" enabled. It will pick up Amherst pd once in while so I know it is tuned to the correct frequency. It just seems the sensitivity on that freq is very weak. All other channels I scan work fine. I have another antenna coming in so I hope that will work better. The scanner works great except for the Amherst pd issue.

Definitely no reception issues in Cheektowaga. Curious to see what was causing this and hope your antenna swap fixes it!

still waiting on new antenna. Amherst pd comes in this morning but the uniden 436hp shows 1 bar on the signal meter. The slightest movement of the scanner and it drops out.

Have you checked to see if you have any interference that is local to you on or around that frequency?

no i had the radio just set to 424.300 nac 29a. I had a new antenna come in yesterday but it has a male sma connector so it will not work. I have a new antenna coming in tmrw to hopefully improve the situation.

What is your squelch setting? Generally should be 2 or no greater than 3.

well i got in a Diamond SRH77ca antenna. It does make a improvement over my WSMA-801 on every frequency by adding a bar to the signal meter. I can now pick up Amherst P25. My uniden 436hp picks the signal up with 3 bars. The funny part is if I move the scanner about 6 feet away where i originally had it i will lose the signal all together. Only thing i dont like is the 15" height of this antenna. I will look around for other antennas but for now everything is coming in.

Update. Put my diamond antenna on the roof next to my directv dish. Used a existing rg6 that was there which ran into basement. Plugged that line into a Motorola signal booster then continued line to scanner which has a wall jack in family room. Wow!!! Not onky does it Amherst pd loud ans clear with full signal it also picks up as far away as Jamestown and city of Batavia. It took a a week of playing around but it all paid off. Btw. I also purchased a tram 1410 which I put in the attic the performance on that was sub par.

Do you have a purchase link to the signal booster?
