The ammo won't fire like it would from a gun. It will be more like a M80 firecracker with a little brass shrapnel flying around. I don't think being hit would be fatal unless you were very, very close. Even then I doubt it.
Yes I am, but nothing close to that would occur when it's not contained in a rifle chamber & barrel to build the pressure required. Most likely the brass shell would split open on the side. The bullet itself, might go several feet, but not with any lethal velocity or energy. The normal gear firemen wear would probably be adequate protection.
