amplified speaker mic?

Has anyone heard of and/or have, or made an amplified speaker mic? I want to be able to hear my scanners while walking around, and I figure a speaker mic will help a lot. I would want it to take AA batteries. How much would it cost to make one? Also, could you put a voice inversion decoder/inverter on the speaker mic? I think the decoder could intigrate an amplifier into it.

Why?

The pure nature of a speaker mic is to have the mic/speaker up near your head...there is no need for an amplified one...that's what the speaker in the scanner is for...

Not sure what you are trying to do, but I for one don't need a SP any louder than nessesary next to my ear when I am at work...

I just thought it would need to be amplified because on my pro-95 when you plug a speaker in, it is really really lowwww (BTW- I know you can short the ground on the antenna and the ground on the headphone jack to make it louder.). So I didn't know it would do the same thing or not.

Do you know of one you can use for a scanner out of the box (no cutting wires or adding plugs)?

I posted a topic a few days ago about listening to my scanner through my car stereo. I was told to go get a FM transmitter. I did and it is just the answer to what I was looking for. You could get one of these FM transmitters and have a home stereo or something of that nature by you scanner and plug the FM transmitter in and tune your radio to the right frequency and you should be golden. It also runs on 2 AAA's if you get the cheaper one. I got the one you can plug into a cigarette lighter to power it. It's an idea rather than opening up your scanner and messin around with the wires and stuff. I sure as hell wouldn't do that myself. :? Don't know enough and don't wanna screw something up.

As far as I know ther are no "amplified speaker/mics".

They are driven off the radios amplifier.

All I have on my 95 is a paper clip wrapped around the BNC adaptor on the scanner and around the headphone/speaker male piece. So no openning up the scanner. :wink:

Do you know of a speaker mic I can use for a scanner? Kind of hard to use a FM transceiver when the scanner is on your belt and you don't have a FM reciever! :wink:

Dude...

In a short amount of time, its not going to be something to worry about... as you will find the your audio circut it going to go kablooie.

Essentinally, your going to fry the audio amp by having it draw more power above its rated design, and your going to be shelling out $$ to fix it or buy a new one.

Why not try an earpiece or headphones..at least you won't look as wackerish that way...it will be like wearing a walkman, and you will have less people giving you funky looks.

Do the paper clip or a piece of wire mod. I've done it for years without a problem. Really improves the audio.

I findit hard to believe that the ground connection on the antenna and teh audio ground are not at the same potential.

I find it harder to believbe that grounding one side of teh audio jack increases teh volume.

But, Anything is posible. Maybe they saved a few cents building it that way.

1. Use a small piece of narrow wire and twist one end around the BNC antenna on the radio with the antenna removed. Attach the rubber (or other) antenna.

2. Twist the other end around the the speaker plug. Insert the speaker plug into the radio.

The volume through the speaker goes up 300%. Works on both RS and Uniden radios. Won't need an amplified speaker.

Well, as strange as it sounds, Uniden inserts a small-value resistor in the ground connection of the earphone jack to reduce the audio level, supposedly to help protect your hearing. Bridging the ground side of the earphone jack to the ground side of the antenna connector "restores" the audio level. There actually used to be a company that sold a small metal plate that slid over the BNC connector on the scanner with a hole in it that lined up with the earphone jack, but I don't remember what model it was for. Many savvy users simply insert a jumper on the inside of the scanner to bring back the full output.

Edit: Apparently GRE now does it also. Didn't work on my Pro-43, but does on my Pro-92.

PS: This only works when using an external speaker or earphone. It does not have any effect on the internal speaker volume. Nor will it burn up the audio amp, as long as your external speaker is the proper one for your scanner (usually 4 or 8 ohm), since you are restoring the audio to the level that is supplied to the internal speaker. I modded my BC-100XLT using the internal jumper method, and used it (with an 8 ohm external speaker) for better than 6 years before I sold it to somebody else. It died several months later when he left it on the roof of his car and drove away. Seems Uniden doesn't build it's scanners to survive falling off a car roof at 35 MPH and then being run over by a van.

I knew about it! I always had full audio without the mod on my BC250D before I sold it. However I do have to do the mod in order to have full volume on my Pro-96.
